The iPhone Duo’s Personal ‘Hello’ Screen Might Skip Canada at Launch

Apple’s iPhone Duo will greet some first-time buyers by name, and a developer has now shown exactly how the trick works.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported last week that Apple retail stores will be able to customize the Duo’s first boot so it says “Hello, Mark,” for example. The catch: it’s US only, Duo only, and English and Spanish only.

Developer @itspdfu then posted a video of the personalized greeting running, calling it a “very cool use of the in-box updater.” That’s the system Apple uses to update iPhones while they’re still sealed in the box at its stores.

According to the developer, the new renderer already knows “Hello” in 49 languages, which hints Apple could take this well beyond two. It relies on Macintosh Skeletal, a font Steve Moser spotted in the first iOS 27 beta back in June.

In a follow-up, @itspdfu said the standard Hello still uses pre-drawn paths rather than the new font, and the personalized version doesn’t cycle through languages. Your name sits on its own line, and both lines scale together. The font mostly covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, so French names should render fine whenever Apple gets around to Canada.

It’s a classic Apple surprise-and-delight moment, the kind of small touch we haven’t seen from the company in a while. Hopefully it makes its way to Canada too, especially with the iPhone Duo starting at $2,999 here.

For now, Canadians will have to settle for the regular Hello. Apple says iPhone Duo preorders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability in Canada starting October 23. Being greeted by name at an Apple Store would at least beat being greeted by a lineup in October drizzle.

The Duo has been full of surprises, from its replaceable crease-hiding layer to unannounced StandBy features and new Focus mode tricks.

Would you want your iPhone to say hello by name, after dropping over $3,000 CAD after taxes?
