‘Trolls: World Tour’ Scores Hollywood’s Biggest Digital Release Ever

Universal’s new ‘Trolls: World Tour’ animated movie has just become Hollywood’s biggest opening day and opening weekend release for a digital title, Forbes is reporting. The title has been streamed over 10x times more than Universal’s next-biggest traditional digital release i.e. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

In Canada, Trolls: World Tour is currently available for rent on iTunes at $19.99 CAD in Canada. The movie is also at the top on every digital platform in the U.S., including Amazon, Comcast, Vudu, DirectTV, Verizon Fios, and FandangoNow.

According to FandangoNow, Trolls: World Tour is their most pre-ordered title ever and was the top-selling release on all three of its first three days.

“The #TrollsWorldTour hashtag generated 14,000 tweets in the week prior to release. It fueled what turned out to be the service’s biggest total weekend in their short history.

So, yes, it’s the closest we’re going to get to a traditional “new movie tops box office” report for awhile. But, especially sans hard numbers, does it mean anything beyond audiences flocking to the new release with the massive marketing campaign behind it?”

If the quarantine continues, movie studios will have no choice but to sacrifice huge financial windfalls to score quick cash sooner with such VOD release.
