Twitter suddenly has started publicly talking about an ‘edit’ button, after Tesla CEO Elon Musk bought a 9.2% stake in the company and will soon join the company’s board of directors.

According to the @TwitterComms account on Tuesday afternoon, it said, “now that everyone is asking…yes, we’ve been working on an edit feature since last year!”.

“No, we didn’t get the idea from a poll,” said @TwitterComms, indirectly referring to Musk’s recent poll asking if Twitter should add an edit button.

Twitter says “we’re kicking off testing within @TwitterBlue Labs in the coming months to learn what works, what doesn’t, and what’s possible.” The social network then shared a follow up teaser video showcasing how the edit button would work. A user would be able to edit a tweet by tapping the three dots menu, then selecting ‘Edit Tweet’.

On April 1, Twitter said “we are working on an edit button”, but it wasn’t taken seriously given it was April Fool’s Day. Now we know an edit button may come sooner than expected.

“Looking forward to working with Parag & Twitter board to make significant improvements to Twitter in coming months!”, said Musk on Tuesday morning, referring to the social network’s CEO Parag Agrawal.
