The newest Xbox from Microsoft is going disc-free.
According to a new press release, Microsoft has officially unveiled the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, a disc-less version of the company’s current generation console priced at $50 less than the regular Xbox One S.
Announced during yesterday’s “Inside Xbox” video presentation, the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition is identical to the existing One S except for, of course, not having a disc slot in the front.
“Consumer appetite for digital content and experiences are stronger today than ever before,” reads the press release. “Gaming and technology have changed quite a bit since the first Xbox debuted in 2001. During this time, we’ve seen a digital transformation across gaming, music, TV and movies. And closer to home, the success of Xbox Game Pass, which gives members access to over 100 great games, is just another example of how consumers today have grown to expect great digital content. The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition was created for those who prefer to find and play their games digitally and are looking for the most affordable way to play Xbox games.”
The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition comes bundled with three of the most popular titles currently in Microsoft‘s portfolio, namely Minecraft, Forza Horizon 3, and Sea of Thieves.
There’s also the Xbox Game Pass, a subscription service that nets you access to more than 100 games for a monthly fee, including Prey and Just Cause 4. The company has also just announced Xbox Game Pass Ultimate — which tacks on Xbox Live Gold to let you participate in multiplayer action — for $14.99 USD a month.
It’s due to release on May 7 for $299 CAD, or $50 USD less than the standard Xbox One S. The Xbox One S is essentially the original Xbox One under the hood, and the hardware is very outdated at this point. The Xbox One S outputs 4K HDR video content and will up-res games to 4K. It will not run games natively at 4K though.
In related news, first details on the PlayStation 5 have been unveiled by Sony, via an exclusive Wired interview with the system’s chief architect Mark Cerny, who revealed that the next PlayStation console will include ray-tracing support and have a high-speed solid-state hard drive.
