Dev Team Says Hold Off 2.2 Firmware Update!

Last week we talked about the upcoming iPhone 2.2 firmware coming our way on November 21st. As for the actual release date we’ll have to wait to see if it comes true or not. However, since the update has not been released yet the iPhone Dev Team has some interesting news for those eagerly awaiting an iPhone 3G software unlock.

According to their recent blog post the Dev Team has once again reminded folks that if you are interested in having your iPhone 3G unlocked (so you can use your iPhone with ANY GSM carrier worldwide), it’s best if you await their instructions once 2.2 is released by Apple. Here’s what they had to say:

Update warning!

Now for something a bit more serious, we’ve explained about the pros and cons of applying Apple’s updates in the past and we’ve warned against the immediate installation of these updates without knowing what they do to your device.

This is indeed true of the iPhone 3G’s upcoming 2.2 release. Installing ‘2.2’ straight away on the iPhone 3G using the iTunes auto-updater could affect your chances of any software unlock in the near future (should one be found and released), so when you see an update in iTunes await our instructions first! Please don’t blindly install the update and then complain about it later 😉

As much as I want my iPhone 3G to be software unlocked so I can use it overseas when traveling, it’s not the end of the world if I jump straight into the 2.2 update because my first gen is still fully unlocked and operational. However, if the iPhone 3G is your primary cellphone you won’t realize how useful an unlocked phone is until you travel overseas or out of the country. It’s painful using any other cellphone after using the iPhone!

Another advantage of having a fully unlocked phone is that you’ll be able to use it with ANY of the new GSM carriers that are set to launch in Canada. We learned that the wireless spectrum bidding was very successful this past summer. Also, Telus and Bell are set to have their own GSM towers up and running in time for the 2010 Olympics. If you want to use your iPhone 3G on these new networks, holding off the 2.2 firmware update might be something worth considering.

Decisions, decisions, right? You’re going to have to decide what your priorities are before you click Update once 2.2 firmware comes out! This might be a time where a little patience will go a long way. Who is going to wait? Who will update right away?
