Reuters Pulls its Phil Schiller Story Citing Substantial Changes

Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing, cooled down the rumours of a cheaper iPhone in an official interview (verified by The Next Web) with the Shanghai Evening News, saying that a cheap iPhone will never be the future of Apple’s products.

Reuters was among the first media outlets to pick up the story, but as of today they pulled their piece claiming that “substantial changes” were made in the original article.

Reuters has withdrawn the story headlined “Apple exec dismisses cheaper phone as a market share grab-report” which was based on a Shanghai Evening News report that was subsequently updated with substantial changes to its content.

No replacement story will be issued.

So what does this really mean? Did Schiller say those words or not? The news comes at the height of the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg reportedly hearing that Apple is indeed working on a low-cost iPhone, although they also claimed the Cupertino company can scrap the plans anytime.

With both publications having an impressive track record of Apple rumours and trustworthy reporting, the Reuters report seemed to contradict their sources.

However, one thing is certain: as of Friday morning, the Shanghai Evening News piece is unchanged, so I am still wondering what caused Reuters’ move. Is Apple working on a cheap iPhone? Or not? The mystery remains unsolved. Yet…
