Samsung Teases With Gold Galaxy S4

We are having a new gold rush here: the new gold iPhone 5s turned out to be a success. The vast majority of iPhone 5s buyers were after the gold version, which, unfortunately, was available in limited supply only. So how are competitors reacting to this? If you ask Samsung, their answer is ready: by introducing the gold Galaxy S4.

The new devices were announced on Wednesday by Samsung Gulf. So for anyone who is interested in obtaining a shiny new gold model: it unfortunately runs Android and has a less responsive screen than the iPhone 4, but that’s not an issue if you get used to it.

Anyways, the models feature the same plastic case, and they will be available in two colour options: gold brown and gold pink.

But Samsung is just one of the companies following Apple’s lead: HTC is also rumoured to be releasing a gold version of its flagship One model, AppleInsider highlights.

What’s interesting here is that both Samsung and HTC have faced accusations of copying Apple’s product design. I would have been silent if they had announced the new products before the gold iPhone 5s launch, but considering that the model sold out within 10 minutes of Apple starting to accept orders through its online store, Samsung’s and HTC’s move certainly raises an eyebrow.

    I wonder how many males who received a gold iPhone, after holding it in their hands, suddenly realized it’s a more feminine shade. Or if it took their girlfriends/wives to say to them, “why did you buy a girl’s phone?”

    I think Samsung clued in to that, which is why they are designing more clearly defined masculine and feminine versions.

    Keep in mind that any manufacturing industry that is even remotely fashion/style related (from clothing to refrigerators), follows projected colour trends. These trends are set well in advance of product releases (years). (Experience from my previous line of work). So these other companies are, at least partially, following these trends. Actually they all are a little behind, as “grey” and “space/cosmos-styling” have already been established as a “current” trend for at least a year now. As has other neutrals, such as browns (notice the woodgrain brown trim on the Samsung).

    Gold and silver are usually accepted jewelry colours, although bold deep pastels are sort of creeping in. I think Apple should drop the continued excessive use of white. As my wife informed me the other day, green is creeping in (remember green appliances… [shudder]… luckily not that avocado share).

    Pale pink (as shown in the Samsung image) is also a current (although perhaps brief) trend.

    So, although Samsung clearly copies, and is often late to the party, Apple isn’t their only inspiration.

    Wow. Not surprised. Samsung’s business practices are truly audacious and repulsive. Any attempt to justify their blatant copycatting is plain naive.

    You’re putting way too much thought into this … Electronic trends are quite different than fashion.

    Since I actually know what I’m talking about on this subject, I’m afraid you’re wrong. As I said “Fashion” applies to ALL things. As an extreme (and converse) example in the electronics field, look how the first iMac colours actually SET industrial colour trends.

    In the world of product development – intensive thinking is what people get paid to do. There is no such thing as over-thinking.

    Colour isn’t the only thing that sells electronics or the windows phones would be top sellers. Electronics are different. Look at how successful the iPhone has been with just Black and White as their colours.

  • While it’s not the only thing that sells electronics, it does have an influence. Especially on certain people. My wife’s contract is up for renewal, and I told her to wait until after the keynote as Apple would be updating the iPhone line. On the day of release, she went to Apple’s website, took a look, and told me she LOVED the gold one and that’s the one she’d be getting. She didn’t care about specs, she only cared about the look, and the new gold colour had her giddy with excitement. Had Apple released a Product RED 5c, she may have been torn as to what phone she wanted, but with the current lineup, it was the gold 5s, no contest.

    ??? … I never said it was.

    Black & white are distinct, powerful and opposite colours. It’s the Henry Ford method of marketing.

    Good point. In many products… It matters little to most consumers what the specs & capabilities are (electronics are different for those so inclined). My wife was similar. Loved the gold. Her only other comment to me was, will facebook run faster? That, and price, is ALL she needs to base a buying decision on (unlike the VERY few of us who get all nerded out over the thing).

    The way you were speaking of colour trends insinuates that colour selection makes a phone more salable.

    Wow. Sorry man, but I’m not going to explain the most basic aspects of marketing to you. Instead, look at the now 3 colours, as well as the 5c colours and ask yourself “why”? If you still can’t grasp this incredibly obvious and simple concept, it’s best just to leave the conversation.

    At this point in the iPhones evolution it’s not a matter of “why” as much as it is “why not”

    Look, I’ll give you one example to HOPEFULLY enlighten you…

    My wife would be content to wait a year before upgrading to a new phone. But she saw the gold one and it sparked her interest to purchase this year instead of next.

    The gold colour of the phone is what has encouraged her to buy sooner. This means that she is buying “more often”. This is known as consumerism – which is a facet of creative marketing practices. It may just take one extra special thing to make a consumer buy. Changes in colour and style are two things that are very often used to influence consumerism.
