Rogers Introduces New Canada/USA Data Plans

Rogers has launched two new North American (US/Canada) Data add-ons.

The new data add-ons allow customers to use the available data anywhere in Canada or the USA. In other words, you can use the data add-on in the USA without any additional data roaming fees.

The new data add-ons start at $35/month and also have a Flex Plan beginning at $45/month. The new data add-ons do not replace the existing Rogers data add-ons, as both will still be available. However customers now have the option to pay a little bit more per month and have no data roaming fees when used in the USA.

I asked about these new plans on howardforums and I was told that if I were to add the $40/1GB plan, it would replace any other data plan I currently have. In other words, I would lose my 6GB/$30 data plan.

Definitely not worth it at all. I am going to the Rogers store on the weekend that sold me my iPhone and will ask if this is true.

If it is true then that is really stupid that it would replace your current data plan.

I'm also thinking about switching my 6GB for $30 data plan for the 1GB for $40 CAN&US data plan. My only concern is that if I find it's not enough data, I won't be able to switch back to the 6GB/$30 plan. I'm currently well under the 1GB limit, but I'm wondering how that'll change once skype becomes available on 3G. Does anyone have any idea how much data Skype actually uses?

Hey again.

I was on the Roger's site looking at these new plans, and I noticed that the new "Flex Plan" that is for the US that starts at $45 and goes up as the data usage increases, is under the "Mobile High Speed Internet Plans" whereas the other plans are under the "Smartphone Data Plans" heading.

Does this mean that I can't add that $45 Flex Plan to my plan for when I go the the US?

I ask because I was thinking of adding the flex plan instead since I have no idea how much data I would use and it would be better to not worry and just pay more if I use more.

That's correct. The Flex Plans are only for the Rogers internet stick
and similar products. Though I can see your point in that flex data
would be nice!

Aww, I had a feeling it that was the case.

Well there goes that idea. Kinda silly because Rogers has a flex plan under their Smartphone data plans, but they forgot to add a US/Canada one!

I guess I have to add that $40/1GB plan. Could I add two $40/1GB plans instead? If that is possible.

For Canada data, a smartphone could do the flex but for roaming data,
unfortunately not.

At this time you will only be able to add one roaming data package. So
you have a choice of $35 for 500MB or $40 for 1GB.

I guess I will add the $40 for 1GB plan since it's $5 more for double the data. I just hope that 1GB will be enough because I will probably use google maps a pretty good amount, although I have noticed google maps doesn't use a whole lot of data. I am only going to be in the US for 6.5 days roughly so 1GB sounds like enough.

What do you think in regards to 1GB of data for roughly 6.5 days? I won't stream video because I don't like the quality of video on 3G and I won't stream music, thats what 32GB of storage is for.

Maybe I should shut off the WiFi on my iPhone and only use 3G for a week (reset the data tracker maybe) and see how much data I use. Then I will have a good idea if 1GB would be enough for roughly 6.5 days.

Look at your monthly Rogers statements. Your bill cycle runs 30 days.
See how much data you've used then and go from there.

Personally, I use about 400MB a month. Then again, I have a lot of
WiFi access.

I have some questions about these new data plans.

Seeing as they are for the United States, would I be able to add the $40/1GB data plan to my plan for when I go to the United States for March Break and then remove it when I return to Canada?

I would only be in the United States for 7 Days tops, so would 1GB of data be enough for 7 Days using 3G during the day? I will have a hotel with WiFi so that's what I would use at night, but during the day (we are sightseeing almost all day long,) I will be using 3G a lot. (Leaving hotel at around 9 - 10 am and spending the day driving around/sightseeing until about 7-8 pm, repeat this for each day)

The answer to this might depend on what plan you currently have. If you have a "value pack" or some such thing with a x-year term, you'll have to break that plan to sign up for the monthly add-on. Breaking that plan means -- possibly -- a penalty. Also, the add-on data plan does not include visual voice mail or unlimited texting, so if you're going to pay for those, a bundled plan would be better. This US/Canada plan, IMHO, is best for people who travel regularly, not for the occasional visitors like in your case. You might be better off with the keeping whatever bundled plan you have and just paying for US roaming... <GASP!>

Hmm, the only value pack I have is the "iPhone Visual Voicemail" value pack. As for using visual voicemail in the states, I mainly use the data functions of the iPhone the majority of the time I use it, I sometimes make phone calls but hardly ever compared to how much I use data. I send texts more than make calls but not by much. The phone calls and texts are mainly with my friends and aren't really important haha :P.

Dotorious is correct however, Rogers does allow "stacking" of features
now, so that may apply to data as well.

What this means is you could have two data plans on top of one another
without having to cancel anything but only have 500MB to use.

With that being said, you have a regular value pack. There is no data
plan on your value pack. Your data plan is apart of your actual voice
plan or it's a separate data add-on.

In any case, calling Rogers and having them add the US data while
you're roaming shouldn't be an issue. Just make sure you add it as
"month to month" and not contracted.

Alright thanks. I see the data plans for the US/Canada now. They were on the same page as their other data plans, thats why I didn't see them.

My data plan is separate, I have the $30/6GB data plan, so that seems like that won't be a problem. And I would definitely not want to make it contracted because I hardly ever go to the US! Hehe.

In regards to using the iPhone in the US, other than switching Data Roaming to ON and adding the data plan, is there anything else I should be aware of? Like other things I have to do to make it work?

I guess that since it is a US plan that Rogers somehow gives AT&T money to let their customers use 1GB of data on AT&Ts network.

I guess 1GB would be loads, since I have had my iPhone 3GS since launch day June 19 2009 and my data usage according to my iPhone is 628MB, it is more than that because the number went down a few times when I power cycled the iPhone, so maybe 800-850MB.

I would guess that 1GB would be plenty for 7 days, seeing as most people don't go over 500MB in a 30 day period.

You could even use 500MB.

If your iPhone data tracker shows 800MB as your data since June,
you're using very little, about 100MB, per month.

Hey there again, sorry for asking so many questions, I have no idea when it comes to using a phone outside of Canada.

If I bring my iPhone to the US, would I have to turn "Data Roaming to ON" under settings? Is there anything else I would have to do?

Also, are these plans on the Roger's website yet? I have been looking all over their site with no luck.

I just called Rogers this afternoon and switched to this plan. Seriously, this simplifies a whole lot of hassle (iPhone used only via wireless, another unlocked phone + US SIM + "traveling" wireless Boingo, etc.) for those of us who go back and forth a lot.

The plan is brand new, and I spoke to no less than 6 Rogers customer reps over 3 days before finally reaching someone who knew what I was talking about. If you call, ask them to look for "one rate data plan" or "iPhone Cdn & US Data Value Pack." If they say you're imagining things, call back to get someone else.

The data plan is 500mb/unlimited txt/visual voicemail, but the phone (voice plan) is separate. I'll see when we get on the road in a couple of days, but this should mean that I can check email, txt, go online, and retrieve voicemail anywhere in the US. I currently pay $35 for the Canada-only version, so it's $15 more a month, but given how much time I'll be spending in the US over the next few months, this sure beats some crappy data roaming and stress over per-MB charge. The only downside is that when I switch back to Canada-only plan later when I'm no longer traveling a lot, I'll have to pay $40 for the same plan I'm currently locked into for $35.

Be nice if I could add a US-only data add-on for those times when I do travel to the US.... but if I was in the US regularly this would be a decent deal, considering the amount of money you pay if you didn't have something like that.
