Free Revamped MobileMe Coming in April?

More MobileMe rumours coming your way. According to a source, iLounge reports that MobileMe will be free and revamped, with service coming in April. The existing version of MobileMe will be phased out in the next year. Existing MobileMe retail boxes have already been discontinued.

…the source was told that Apple will be supporting the existing version of MobileMe for the next year, suggesting that the new version will be quite different from the existing service; the extra year of support would likely cover those who recently paid for a full year of MobileMe, prior to Apple removing any method through which a user could pay for the service.

Apple’s $1 billion dollar data centre in North Carolina will soon be put to good use. Previous rumours of iTunes in the cloud and a MobileMe revamp make this new move by Apple imminent, as Steve Jobs did promise MobileMe was going to ‘get a lot better in 2011’ last December.

With free cloud services from Google and DropBox, paying $99US/year for MobileMe doesn’t make a lot of sense to people. Especially since Find My iPhone is now free for all. Could we see the announcement of an iOS-based social network, that includes Find my Friends in iOS 5?

  • I certainly hope so. I love Google Sync, but it just doesn’t work quite as well as I’d like for Contact syncing between my Mac and iPhone. MobileMe, however, does it perfectly (obviously).
I could care less about MobileMe Mail (I have Gmail for that) or iDisk (I’ve got Dropbox)… at most, I might save $20/year with MobileMe Gallery – instead of paying for Flickr Pro.
But for Back to My Mac, Contact/Calendar Syncing, and Find my iPhone (which is already free, thankfully), I’d love for this to happen with MobileMe.

  • My subscription renews tomorrow. LOL

i’d put my hand to fire that the new Data Center was acquired for a bbm like iphone native app, that will be somehow connected to the new mobileme or wtv they call it …

  • So I thought if I let it go right to the renewal date that they might just charge $0.00 and renew it for me but no such luck. I got the email stating that I needed to renew or I would lose all functionality except for email, which would be lost after a grace period…two weeks or something.

I chatted with support and she said she couldn’t comment on rumours (obviously) but that I could cancel within 45 days for a full refund. Hopefully there is a transition for existing members so I don’t have to cancel (lose my email name) and we will still get a refund.

According to an apple rep I chatted with over their live help over a similar concern – even if you don’t renew you won’t lose your email address anyway. They have only recycled email addresses once. The address will stay associated with your account, you just can’t use it until you pay (or the free service comes through)
