How to Update iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 via WinPwn (VIDEO)!
*edit* Just to let everyone know, this tutorial has been outdated and needs updating. If you want to update your first gen iPhone to 2.x.x firmware, this is what you need to do:
1. Sync your iPhone. Update in iTunes to 2.2.1 firmware. You can use the latest version of iTunes.
2. Download QuickPwn (either Mac or PC) and the 3.9/4.6 bootloader files (links below).
3. Launch QuickPwn and follow the instructions.
4. Afterwards, your iPhone should be jailbroken and unlocked! I’m going to have an upcoming post on how to do this in more detail.
I remember the days of owning my first generation iPhone (my significant other uses it now). The jailbreaking/activating/unlocking game certainly was a lot of fun, but now that I have my iPhone 3G those days are over–or are they? My first gen iPhone is still on the stable 1.1.4 firmware. Since the release of 2.0 and 2.0.1 I’ve been itching to update my firmware. I know a lot of you first gen users are still on 1.1.4. I’ve also received emails asking for a guide on how to update–well your wish has now come true!
I finally took some time one night to get everything setup to prepare myself for this update. I followed the guide from iClarified carefully on how to update and jailbreak 2.0.1 using WinPwn 2.0.0.4. However, the guide forget to mention one critical step: clicking iPwner after the Custom IPSW has been created (this might not make a lot of sense now, but it will–trust me!). This resulted in me getting the “error 1600” message in iTunes. I definitely had a OMG moment but after a quick Google search, I found the solution. So please watch my video carefully on what to do.
How to Update iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 via WinPwn (Windows users only)
1. You will need to have iTunes 7.7.1 installed. You might also need the .NET Framework for Windows XP users.
2. Download the following files and put them into a folder on your desktop (name it winpwn):
Once you have these files, watch my video and it should explain the rest! I fast forwarded some of the unnecessary parts during the restore, but everything is there. The video is just under 10 minutes, although the entire process took me over an hour.
Let me know how this works out for you. After updating to 2.0.1 my first gen feels like it has “come back from the dead”…it’s alive again! Also, updating to 2.0.1 has opened my eyes again to how much we are missing out by not jailbreaking our iPhone 3G’s. Soo…expect a iPhone 3G jailbreak video coming soon in the near future!
Side notes:
– This should work for people on firmware 1.1.1/1.1.2/1.1.3
– Prior to jailbreaking I synced my first gen in iTunes–everything was backed up.
– After the update, I synced the phone and restored from the back up. Everything was back to normal. Contacts, settings, bookmarks, etc.
Big thanks to iClarified and the WinPwn team for their hard work on this!

Thanks for the video dude. I usually make my vids at 1am or later too.
will this work for first gen with 1.1.3 cause that’s what I have. thanks.
will my existing address stuff on the first Gen be gone after the upgrade?
awesome video!
did you click “restore” at the very end there or just close the itunes app?
ruffdeezy: Yeah, for stuff like this it’s better to do it at night when you don’t have to use the iPhone!
Justin: Yes, it should work for you as well. Just sync your phone before you do it. After the update, restore from your synce and everything will be there.
eva: At the end, I “restored” from my backup to get everything back.
i followed the video and it all worked fine ..but i tried to go from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 about 3 weeks ago and got all messed up now after i watched the video and did all the steps the phone wont read my rogers sim cards …any ideas??
Ken: are you saying you just tried this and it didn’t work? Have you tried a fido sim card?
No i did it with a rogers sim card everything works fine except at the end itunes tells me that it dosent recognize the sim card
That’s weird. After the update iTunes doesn’t read the phone like that. It’s jailbroken so no activation via iTunes is needed. I would try a full restore to 1.1.4, then try this video guide again.
Okay so how would i go back to 1.1.4?
1. Download 1.1.4 firmware http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4313.20080226.Sw39i/iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw
2. Sync iPhone to back up
3. Get iPhone into DFU mode
4. Shift+Click restore and choose 1.1.4
…that should do it. Then follow this guide…it should work! Good luck. 😉
Thank You
I tired it and couldn’t get it to work. Had a hard time getting it into DFU mode, despite all the descriptions on the Net. Will the iTunes message say it’s in DFU mode or recovery, because it said receovery for me and had the recovery graphic. Not sure if this was the problem. Anyway, when I tried to install the custom firmware (and even later when I tried to do a normal iTunes recover), I kept getting 160X errors. Nearly bricked my phone.
Luckily, I was able to use Ziphone to restore the phone (unlocked and jailbroken) and everything was still on it (music, photos, contacts, etc.). Thank god for Ziphone.
All in all, it took me most of the day and I’m right back where I started. I think I’ll stick with 1.1.4. 🙂
i followed the video and had the same problem as ken… i then tried to restore it to 1.1.4 and it says now that the iPhone “iPHone” could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (20)
i cant seem to get anytning to work….any ideas…all the shows on my iphone now is the connect to itunes screen
Aaron: iTunes will say it’s in recovery mode. Watch the video again for reference if you haven’t already. Did you do the iPwner step? Thanks for trying! 🙂
ron: This is a tough one, not sure where the error is occuring for you guys.
its once i shift click restore in itunes and after it prepares the iphone software for restore…it finishes and then auto reboots itself….then itunes doesnt recognize the sim card anymore and it shows me the connnect to itunes screen on my phone.
i just want to get back to 1.1.4 now and get my phone working again 🙁
ron: Have you tried ZiPhone to jailbreak/unlock your 1.1.4? I would double check that you are using the correct iPhone firmwares…
iphone fan i did it to a T and there is a step that says iphone software has to check my ipod i press check then it tells me dfu mode restore i press shift ok shift +restore and it says preparing iphone software there is a apple on the screen and a round data loop
well the first time it told me that my sim is not the right carrier so i tried again waiting….
i have 7.7.1 is that the right itunes
jack: 7.7.1 is correct. When do you get that error message?
i am on att wireless blue but i roam in canada on rogers do i check the youtube /fix or not
jack: not sure about that one. If you use AT&T primarily, do not check. If you use Rogers primarily, check it off.
second time and i am locked out it is restored to 2.01 but locked i think
it does not unlock my phone
can you see if i made a mistake

jack: just follow the video that’s all I can say. Can’t see what’s wrong there. I’ll look into it…
i am doing it again it told me that the file is already on the c:// isaid overwrite
when you put it in dfu mode do you get that box that says need to check your firmware of your ipod then i get the box do you want to restore
jack: try uninstalling winpwn completely and deleting the custom firmwares.
as for the dfu asking that question, no. Are you updating your iPod or iPhone??
now error 1621
ziphone cant seem to find the iphone although it does appear in itunes. ive tried restoring using both the 1.1.4 and 2.0.1 custom firmwares and both give me the unknown error popup.
im not sure how to check now what firmware i was using but im positive i had 1.1.4 on it to begin with.
i did notice and maybe too late though that when i originally followed the video and shift+restored i used the original 2.0.1 ipsw file that i had downloaded not the custom one….could this be the cause of all of this and is this reversable?
or am i as they say “up shit’s creek”?
thanks for any help.. im pretty new to all this iphone firmware business…
just throwing this idea out there but what if i restored my first gen-iphone to its factory settings via itunes restore (so not shift clicking restore) and then unlock it using ziphone….
is this possible?
thanks
Hi Ron,
It’s been awhile but did you ever resolve your problem. I seem to be having the same issues that you had. How did you fix it?
Thanks
I dont know what i did i tried ziphone ..i set the phone back to factory settings …and what seemed like the 200th time i finally got it to work…woohooo
Hi,
After did half the work, i started to restore my iPhone. But i got an Error it said it failed to restore.
It said the following:
The iPhone iPhone can not be restored. An unknow error (1604)
can you please please help me?
ron: you need to make sure you follow the video…select the custom firmware after shift+click! 🙂
ken: nice work! 🙂
Jesse: Did you click iPwner?
Yes i did, i actually did it again, to make sure i really did it. I have an hacked iphone from the USA in holland unlcoked and all. but now, im restoring it back to 1.1.4 (i damn hope it works) and then try all steps again.
What do i have to do if this fails too?
i used to have trouble restoring my 2g iphone to the custom firmware… i kept getting error message like Ron got .. .unknown error (1) or unknown error(20).. .but after i reinstall itunes .. everything went perfect!! THANKS for this awesome video!~
every thing went smoothly until the iphone did not recognize my sim card. – looks like it is a common problem (fido card). – I also tried w rogers sim card and it does not work either – help.
Nice job on the video clip, I updated mine and everything went smooth.
Now I prob restored the iPhone 20 times because of MAIL issues lol and I also noticed some 3rd party apps. can cause some problems. For instance, BiteSMS and if u SSH ur old saved files over the original, well the app. does not load anymore causing the iPhone to get stuck on the loading screen if u restart it. (Which u need to restore again…) I also noticed a few other problems with apps. on 2.0.0.1 but o well, google.ca is ur bestfriend for all ur answers! 😉
Good luck eveyone!
ive done everything several times again…and nothing seems to work…my iphone continues to show the “usb cable pointing to the itunes logo” screen and when i try and restore it just gives me an unable to restore error….ziphone doesnt work either it wont recognize my iphone…it just searches an searches….
im at my wits end here. shoudl i just regular restore via itunes? will this brick my phone or just restore the default factory settings so that i can then unlock it?
please help
thanks!
Worked perfectly on my Gen 1 iPhone purchased in Cupertino last year. Pwned it for my sister who is on Rogers in Canada. AWESOME!!!
Jack – you have to be EXTREMELY patient after you see the apple & round data loop on the screen of the iphone after you shift & click restore. It takes a good 10 minutes for that to go away, and for it to follow the “normal” screens in the video. It does work – just be confident! (remember that iPhone Fan said it took an hour or so the first time around).
It took me 40 min total. If you have any questions email me se****@*****st.net
I’m on a dead end, im trying to make a new file RIGHT NOW. i hope it works 🙂
I did everything as you showed it on the video, and I do not have wifi. any suggestions. – thanks
Hi,
Me again
Using WinPwn if i update unlocked 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 firmware will it get locked?
and what is the advantage of updating because i jailbreaked & updated a 2.0 3G to 2.0.1 by WinPwn (I didnt unlock it) and the installer doesn’t have any apps on the updated
Thanks
Im getting errors over and over again, help please help T_T
Hi Guys, if you run into errors, try a combination of the following:
– uninstall and reinstall itunes 7.7
– uninstall and reinstall winpwn 2.0.0.4
– double check you have the CORRECT firmware for your iphone
– Try Googl’ing your error codes
– try the process twice…maybe 3rd time’s a charm.
I did the update once and was successful. Be sure to follow all the steps. Good luck!
I do not get any errors, I just can not see any networks. I try the other with my info and I still can not even see my network. The Wifi address is there in the about but no Networks. Any suggestions?
