Top 5 iPhone Cydia/Installer Applications

A few weeks ago when iPhone firmware 2.1 was released I quickly updated and VOILA! The laggy keyboard and sluggish interface from 2.0.2 had been solved. Less than a week later my iPhone was jailbroken using QuickPwn 2.1. Gaining access to customization and 3rd party apps is all the rage and glory at the moment.

My Top 5 iPhone Jailbreak Applications At the Moment

There are lots of 3rd party applications that are available in Cydia and Installer when you jailbreak. Some are pretty cool whereas some are just plain useless. Remember my list of the Top 5 App Store Apps? Well it’s time to create a new Top 5! Let’s go over my favorite Top 5 Jailbreak Apps!

1. PDAnet – With PDAnet, you can now tether your iPhone data plan and turn your iPhone 3G into a wireless router! PDAnet puts NetShare and iPhoneModem to shame because it’s incredibly easy to setup, plus you will have access to FULL internet. It’s a must have app for people who will jailbreak their iPhones.

2. QIK – QIK is the ultimate video recording solution on your iPhone 3G. With QIK you can record and stream LIVE video to your QIK.com portal for the entire world to see. It’s a fantastic app for when you come across something that should be recorded and live streamed to the internetz. For example, when you find out that tethering your data plan resulted in a $100,000 bill, and you want the world to witness your rage, QIK might be the outlet you’ve been waiting for.

3. QuickGold – I haven’t reviewed this yet but it’s quite possibly the most useful application I’ve used to date. QuickGold brings search to your iPhone, similar to the application QuickSilver on the Mac. With one click of the home button, you can search contacts, SMS messages, bookmarks, apps, and anything else you can get your hands on. Just touch the results and QuickGold will launch the respective application.

4. BossPrefs – This is a must have app for those with jailbroken iPhones. BossPrefs gives you the ability to control preferences on your iPhone that Apple left out. There’s also a option to create a shortcut to launch BossPrefs by double tapping the home button. Once there, you can instantly shut off WiFi, 3G, EDGE, Bluetooth, you name it, it’s there. Also you can hide some of the default icons (EG Weather, Stocks, Clock, etc) to clean up your Springboard. Definitely a cool app and a must have.

5. Winterboard – Last but not least, let’s not forget everybody’s favorite this fall, Winterboard. The successor to Summerboard (what’s next, Fallboard or Springboard?), this application will enable you to change iPhone themes and individual icons, to customize your iPhone. I love being able to change the theme on my iPhone. I think it keeps the iPhone looking fresh, plus it will make your homescreen stand out from the gazillion other iPhone 3G’s out there.

Jailbreaking 2.1 Causing Slowdowns?

When I first updated to 2.1 my iPhone 3G was superfast. Now, after the 2.1 jailbreak with QuickPwn the speed was still there. However, just recently I’ve been experiencing some MAJOR lag. Launching SMS, Phone, and even settings has resulted in wait times of up to 10+ seconds!

Could this be a result of the jailbreak, or the ever growing number of applications I keep downloading from the App Store? Are you experiencing any slowdowns? I am considering restoring to 2.1, restoring from back up and then reinstalling my 3rd party applications. Anyone else experiencing slowdowns?

Now that I’ve shared my list, let’s hear your Top 5 Cydia/Installer apps!

.. that iphone lag is happening in non- jailboken phones as well…

& had a all black screen yesterday that said UICC update fail 2….. cancel or accept?
Cancelled it out and asked for a tec since I had been talking with rogers at that moment anyway..
no one could say what it was other than “it must be on apples end”..

springboard was the original home screen’s name, and was made customizable first by summerboard.. that’s why the name summerboard was so clever. all that remains to claim is fallboard, but i think autumnboard sounds a bit nicer.. lol

quickgold and quicksilver search is also like mac leopard’s spotlight (for those mac users unfamiliar with quicksilver). leopard users don’t really have that much use for quicksilver now that apple implemented splotlight in leopard.

i’m excited to hear about qik… i was just thinking about video recording software the other day and thought that i’m sure someone must at some point be able to figure it out. it’s like you read my mind! this will push me into actually jailbreaking my 2.0 first gen iphone… haven’t gotten around to it after the upgrade to 2.0 (before jailbreak was available).. it always takes so long so i always block off a couple of hours for it…

ever since i upgraded to 2.0 and haven’t used installer, i really miss Conversion. that’s a great app for converting everything, and it has a very nice interface! definitely my favourite, i’d have to say. the next favourite is iWoman.. because honestly, sometimes you just need your gadgets to tell you when that time of the month is coming along. not all of us are that in-tune with our ovaries…. lol.. SummerBoard and Customize are nice if you’re bored with the default look.

i’d have to give my vote to: 1. Conversion; 2. iWoman.

Hmm…so it seems like even though without the jailbreak are experiencing lag with lots of apps installed. I must admit the lag is very frustrating when you’re in a rush to use the phone! Not cool…

I still experience slowdown occasionally with the jailbroken 2.1. Particularly the Note.

Don’t recall if the slowdown still exist after upgrade to the official 2.1 since I’ve jailbroken the phone with Quickpwn the day it’s available.

1. Winterboard (gotta customize that boring default screen!)
2. Cycorder (what’s the hold-up apple??)
3. BossPerfs (simplicity… need I say more!!)
4. QuickGold (spotlight is the best thing to happen to Macs…)
5. I don’t have a fifth favorite yet, but then again, I just jailbroke my 3G this week, so give me time!! 🙂

On a side note… I just received my “Premiere Issue” of iPhone Life Magazine. I’m thinking that this should be shrinkwrapped and kept, as I believe it will be a collectors item one day because come on, how much can you write about a “legit” iPhone?? If it included jail break stuff, then I can see a future for it!!

Have a fantastic Thursday everyone!

Hey Guys, hope everyone is everyone a good Thursday so far!
I’ve read all of the comments and I’m going to recommend an app that I personally enjoy a lot.
It’s called “Dock Prefs”. This app is simply amazing. For those who do not know what it is, it’s an app where you can navigate all over you phone by swiping your finger from the bottom edge of the spring board towards the top (This program runs in the background I’m assuming so you do not need to click on the Dock Prefs app to activate it!). There are default folders like Games, Media, Phone, Utilities, as well it gives you the opportunity to create your own folders. You can swipe your finger from the bottom left corner to the middle, which will enable speed dial. This means you don’t have to press multiple buttons. Instead, you just swipe your finger and it’ll start calling someone from your favourite’s list. A few of you might be worried that it’ll kill battery life because it’s constantly running. However, I have not noticed any difference and I’ve been using it for almost 2 months now! Install it, and let me know if you like it!
Some other apps worth mentioning:
“iCallBR” is a simple app that lets you delete individual recent calls. This might be useful for those of you who do not want a certain number in your recent call history (for whatever reason).
“Respring” is pretty handy too. I’ve read different forums regarding this app and some people say it’s good respringing the phone because it will increase battery life (due to build up of memory, respringing will reset it). If you’re experiencing lag, respringing it might help. I mostly respring whenever my battery icon in the top right screws up (Boss Pref’s enable numeric battery for some reason disappears time to time).
So to recap:
“Dock Prefs”
“iCallBR”
“Respring”
Please comment if you enjoyed or hated any of these apps. Thanks for reading my novel!

Yes! I read the description for iReboot, I believe it is the same thing. When you press Respring, it shows a cool picture of Sonic the Hedgehog and DK terrorizing the default iPhone springboard. HAHA. Also Respring is by the Big Boss people.

No. Before you jailbreak, backup your iPhone. Then go ahead and jailbreak. Afterwards, just restore from backup and all of your contacts and apps will be there waiting for you!

yeah, i found that there is still lag even though i was expecting little to no lag in terms of launching apps and keyboarding. as well, all my apps keep crashing periodically… safari, ipod, sms, as well as cydia (like when i load it up)

I’ve also had some period crashes with some apps, but it’s not a chronic case. We need more firmware updates that’s for sure.

no, like sometimes, my safari needs to crash once before it works and even sometimes, it keeps crashing when it reaches certain points, like coming to your website.

I think you should the App AptBackup to that list. I don’t know if any of you have used it, but in my mind, it’s one of the crucial apps of a jailbroken phone.

Basically, it creates a log file of all of your Cydia apps and stores it in a location that is backed up by itunes on a standard backup.

Then when you update your software (to 2.1 for example) the only app you need to reinstall from Cydia is AptBackup run the program, push restore and it reads in the list that itunes put back on your new 2.1 phone and automatically redownloads all of your Cydia apps and installs them. All you have to do is reorganize the springboard. I find this to be a huge time saver and I just did it last night and it worked flawlessly.

Props to the guy who wrote the app!!

What are the benefits of upgrading 2G iPhone from 2.0.2 to 2.1? I read about the lag people are experiencing so any compelling reasons to stay with 2.0.2?

iPhone Fan
Reply to  sclerozo

2.1 is much better than 2.0.2. Faster, speedier, however I am currently experiencing slowdowns with my JB’d 2.1. I would stay at 2.0.2 if it’s working out for you.

KnightFire

Did a full “clean” restore to 2.1 and “fresh” Jailbreak… still can’t get terminal to install with its launching icon as I had successfully done previously with 2.0.2 – is there a trick to it, like app installation order?
– Rogers 16GB iPhone 3G
– Still getting POSIX error, even after Cydia updates itself
– Can’t play SpaceMonkey unless I un-Jailbreak (always crashes after video)

just downloaded pdanet and could not get it to work. Have been using iphonemodem for some time and I find it to work perfectly. All i need to do is open the app on my mac and on my iphone and I’m connected. Seems easier then the instructions above. It also keeps track of how much bandwith i’ve used. It is a $10 app by so far it seems worth it

in winterboard you see that you can move the stuff you have downloaded up and down the list. all you have to do is put user background above the theme your going to use or just put it at the top to be safe.
after you have it higher in the list it overrides and will make the background yours and not the one that came with the theme

I picked up an iPhone back in september especially for the thought of being able to teather with the phone. 6 gig for 30 bucks seemed like a great deal. Then I found out that it does not work unless you jail break the phone. I waited and searched for rogers to resolve my issues. I live in the boonies but have a strong 3.5g tower signal. Tired of dialup I jailbroke my iPhone in November using autoiphoneunlocker.com (I highly recommend them). Then I used Iphone modem for the teather which worked great until an update and then it was useless. I needed the teather on the road so I broke down and purchased a rogers rocket stick and used the sim from my iPhone so I could take advantage of the 6gig plan. For the last month I have been using PdaNet. They can teather through the USB charging cable. I don’t have to keep swapping the sim chips unless i am using a computer that dosn’t have iTunes installed on it. Also last month I broke 80% of my 6gig plan and rogers text me to warn me of that fact.

Hey there, haven’t purchased the iPhone yet. Was going going to get a blackberry after finding out jailbreaking. During my research I found many instances of people saying: “a. Visual Voicemail is GONE BABY GONE b. end call button GONE BABY GONE c. restart your iphone to END A CALL d. FAVORITES ARE GONE BABY GONE…”

Is this true? Visual voicemail I don’t really mind, but the End call button… Can anyone confirm the End Call button is still there after jailbreaking? Thanks…

For those of you expierencing lag problems try the simplest thing reboot your phone, shut it down and restart, that might work, it works for me, and I dont have a favorite app but I have 12 pages of favorite apps, yes I am an app whore bewteen the app sote and cydia, 3.0 is coming soon watch out now, they might actually do good this time, what would be awesome, if apple just broke down and paid dev team the money already for all the great stuff they have provided us for free, just my two cents, aint worth much!!!
