I can slowly taste the iPhone 3G unlock in the air. We’ve been posting updates about the iPhone 3G software unlock for a while now. First the team managed to crack the baseband, and recently told us to hold off on updating to 2.2 firmware when its release comes on November 21st (rumored).
Well, more news came late yesterday evening from the Dev Team. They’ve posted a video of their work with the iPhone 3G software unlock and announced they are one step closer. Here’s what they had to say:
This ability we now have to spawn background tasks means we are one step closer to the 3G soft unlock. We have a clear path to follow, and “all” that remains is the implementation.
A quick summary of the key achievements we’ve had so far:
- Unsigned code execution on 3G baseband
- Reverting 01.45 baseband to previous versions
- Patching of static text (the AT&V demo)
- Injection of AT routines (the task list demo)
- Injection of background tasks (this demo)
Now it’s on to overriding the baseband code that enforces the carrier lock.
P.P.S. Remember…don’t update to official 2.2 when it comes out if you ultimately want a 3G soft unlock!

do you think it will be necessary to jailbreak in order to unlock?
I’m pretty sure you’ll need to jailbreak to unlock the phone, if you take into consideration the unlock for the first gen iPhone.
In the same order of ideas, I know it’s a general question but might aswell ask it here…
Does your iPhone need to be Unlocked before you Jailbreak it? Or you can straight up Jailbreak it even if it is locked to Rogers out of the box?

Even if one was to update to 2.2, would you not be able to go back to an earlier version at a later date? The reason I ask is that at this time I don’t see any reason that I would require the soft unlock, but if I ever found that it would be to my advantage??
Firmware updates could include permanent baseband updates that cannot be reversed, hence the Dev Team’s warning for you to not update until we await for further instruction.

I was wondering, does the iPhone need to be unlocked before it is Jailbroken? I’m getting my iPhone tonight and I assume it will be locked to Rogers, so is that a problem if the only thing I want to do is jailbreak it on the 2.1 firmware using the QuickPWN tutorial from the forums…?

Just wondering where 2nd Gen phones stand in the midst of this. If we update to 2.2, will we be unable to jailbreak and unlock? I may have missed the information on this topic, but any helpful light would be appreciated. I’m going to check the dev Team’s blog in a moment, to see if I can find anything.

Do you mean 1st gen iPhones? You’ve brought up a good question. The 2.2 firmware update warning I think only applies to the 3G software unlock. Although we’ll have to find out more info.
I’m wondering if they’re saying that we should hold off on the v2.2 update because it contains something that will make it hard/impossible to make a software unlock, period, or that v2.2 is simply going to require a lot of work to make a software unlock again. That is, their v2.1 work is almost done, so if you want to use that, you have to stick with v2.1 firmware. And v2.2 contains changes that make their current work unusable, so they have to start over (perhaps from scratch?) to make an unlock for v2.2?
It’s just a little confusing because the statements aren’t very detailed. v2.1 unlock is almost done, so stick with v2.1 if you want to unlock. That part’s plain and obvious. Now, updating to v2.2 and the details surrounding that are where it’s a little unclear. v2.2 will require more work again to make an unlock? Which will require an unkown amount of time to do, I imagine. So they’re just giving people a heads-up that it is going to take them some time to work-around v2.2 and get a usable unlock? Or is it that they’ve examined early releases of v2.2 and it contains stuff that will make it impossible to unlock?

or

So basicaly there is nothing i can do then the phone is pretty much unuseable
