iPhone Dev Team Responds to 2.2 Firmware Update

Low and behold, the Dev Team has quickly responded to the latest 2.2 firmware update released just a few hours ago. Here’s what they had to say (we were predicting the following anyways right?) about the latest firmware update in conjunction with the upcoming 3G software unlock:

We can confirm that this update SHOULD NOT be applied if you want the chance of a soft-unlock in the near future.

Some facts –

* The 2.2 firmware for 3G contains a baseband updater for the 3G iPhone
* The 2.2 firmware for 2G (1st gen iPhones) doesn’t contain a baseband update and is still at 04.05.04
* We believe that our Pwnage technique (and therefore the Jailbreak) isn’t affected, but PwnageTool and QuickPwn do not support this release as yet, so don’t install if you have third-party (non AppStore) applications that you want to use right now
* We are not working on the 2nd generation iPod touch at the moment, so we cannot comment on what applying the 2.2 software update for this model may do.

So, as always, if in any doubt delay the install of this firmware on any of your devices until we have investigated the release in more detail. Watch this space 😉

There you have it. Just be patient and hold off on updating to 2.2 firmware if this matters to you at all. As you were, fine folks!

Damn…I really want to have the option of unlocking the phone but then again I’m not fully convinced I would want to jailbreak. I’m probably going to cave and update to 2.2 since the likelihood of me leaving the country for an extended period in the next year is low and also I doubt I will jailbreak before my warranty expires. By then they should come out with another unlock or something right?

HI all. I just upgraded my 1st gen iphone to 2.2… unlocked but not jailbroken.. so the upgrade went smooth. I have no real need for anything other than the app store for stuff. I use the phone on Rogers as Pay as U go… so 3g etc is not needed. I manage to find Wifi in many areas. I can check my mail often enough during the day that data a plan for me is a no go.

Thanks, and iPhoning hehe 🙂

1st gen iPhone doesn’t even have 3g. It’s clearly only 2g. And unless you work downtown and/or live in an apartment building, wifi is quite hard to find in gta, even Internet at the airport is pay per use. I’ve had the first gen and now a proud owner of the real 3G iPhone, and by god I love 3G. The speed is really good for most of the apps, and gps is really nice to have most of the time.

Was it Jailbroken before the Update? Was it unlocked before the Update? I got my phone yesterday, factory sealed and updated it to 2.2 as I’m not planning on unlocking it and it worked just fine… Have to be patient though, takes a good 15 minutes to go from 2.1 to 2.2, including the iTunes update, which went from 8.0 to 8.0.2 I believe… Good luck!
