Nimbuzz: Skype, Google Talk, MSN, AOL on your iPhone

One of the best way to make free calls if you’re in a WiFi area is by using Fring. However, it looks like there’s a new kid on the block with similar features, called NimBuzz. This new app released a week ago allows you to use Skype for free calls, chat, messaging, and more!

The first you have to do after downloading Nimbuzz is register an account which takes 10 seconds. After that you can then sign into your regular messaging networks, such as MSN, Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo!, ICQ, Jabber etc. On top of this you can also sign into Facebook and MySpace too to take advantage of Nimbuzz’s built in social networking.

The one feature I wanted to test out was the quality of free voice calls via my Skype account (SkypeOut). I did a couple test calls to some friends and I must say the quality was excellent, even better than Fring. What I can’t figure out though is how to access a dial pad to call numbers on the fly. I was only able to access my current Skype contacts. Either way, it’s hands down the best quality of any VoIP WiFi calling app on the iPhone. Period.

Nimbuzz also offers the ability to chat via landscape mode, which is nice. Now you’ll be chatting with your friends faster than ever before. If you’re looking for an excellent and free voice calls over WiFi app, be sure to download Nimbuzz. Let’s hope their future update will include a dialpad for Skype!

Let me know if you’ve been testing out Nimbuzz. What’s your favorite feature?

Unfortunitly you can’t seem to add a SkypeOut contact from the iPhone either. So you have to add them from Skype itself. IMHO a small price to pay for the AWESOME call quality!

I made quite a few calls (local and long distance) using Nimbuzz today and everyone thought I was using SkypeOut direct from my computer. Some said if it weren’t for the weird caller ID associated with Skype they couldn’t even tell it was VOIP, and from my iPhone to boot!

That’s the same reaction I got from my friend when I called using Nimbuzz. The quality was just awesome! 😉

I’m new to Skype so that’s why I’m asking. Can you call any phone or just Voip?

If you have a SkypeOut account (a Skype account where you pay money to call landlines) then you will be able to access this account with Nimbuzz.

Have you used TruPhone? It works pretty well. Is calling via Skype totally free? I haven’t used it before!?

Calling skype to another skype user (computer or I guess if they have a skype program like this on their phone) is free. However, Skype also offers a pay service called SkypeOut that allows calling to landlines and cell phone numbers. SkypeOut credits (rates) are cheaper than TruPhone I believe. SkypeOut can also be done on subscriptions like unlimited North America calling for around $3 a month.

totally free to call your skype contacts… very cheap to call actual phone numbers…

also, does anyone know if this works with the Jailbreak app to make your phone think you’re on wifi when you’re on 3G… cause 3G skype would be ideal! I’m usually on wifi at home… in which case I can just make calls with skype on the computer…. that and with the average 2mbps (rogers) I’m getting on 3g, I don’t really bother with wifi i rather keep it off all the time and save the battery… too much hassle to turn on and off…

You can trick any app with VoiceOverIP3G. You just need to modify the settings to add whichever app. I think by default it only tricks AppStore and Fring

Does anyone know how exactly to do this – to add Nimbuzz to VoiceOverIP3G? I’d like to do it and I can’t figure out how.

OK – quick question. After reading on this forum about jailbreaking my phone it seems it involves both risk and constant managment as any time apple updates the firmware you need to stay on top of the updates… so, long story short, not convinced yet that I want to break the phone.

Can anyone tell me if this voiceoverIP3G works with a non-jailbroken phone? I am super keen to be able to use skype over 3G.

Thanks!!!

Can anyone tell me if this voiceoverIP3G app will work on a non – jailbroken phone? If so, how?

I have not tried the Skype function yet, but the MSN function is pretty good. I prefer Palringo though just because you have the option to go invisible, plus when you exit the program, it remains idle for 5 minutes.
