iPhone 3G Unlock is Coming on New Year’s Eve 2008

Fresh from the press folks! The iPhone Dev Team just announced that they will be releasing their iPhone 3G software unlock on New Year’s Eve, 2008. So on December 31st, keep an eye out on the interwebs because a packaged, user-friendly application will be coming your way! We reported the other day that the unlock was coming before New Years, and now that has been confirmed. Here is what they had to say:

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

* The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
* This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
* The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.

The iPhone Dev Team announced on their blog that the software unlock application will be easy to use, just like we have seen so far with QuickPwn and BootNeuter. All I have to say is I’m glad that I had the patience to hold off on the 2.2 firmware update via iTunes.

However, for people using “late 2008” aluminum MacBooks (like myself, doh!) there have been issues with the iPhone being recognized in DFU mode. Looks like I might have to resort to using a PC to try the new iPhone 3G software unlock when it’s released on New Year’s Eve! Are you excited yet? 🙂

Ehh…This is good because it broadens the resale market, so if something better comes along then I’ll have more potential buyers. Other than that though…there’s not much use in it…well travelling I suppose, so that’s good too. But as for switching carriers once the new start ups get rolling in Canada…even those who got an iphone right after release, still have about 10 months before their ECF decreases from $400, and if you signed onto the 6gb data plan, that’s another $100 to get rid of Fido/Rogers. I can’t see the prices with the new companies making up for the $500 difference all that quickly, especially when we can already see signs that Fido/Rogers are lowering plan costs to pre-emptively thwart and steam that the new guys may have.

A few new carriers, but they will be focused on each distinct region in the country. For example, Shaw in BC. Search the blog for “wireless spectrum”.

There’s nothing worse than having your cellphone locked to one carrier. This is going to be great for everyone once New Year’s Eve rolls around!
