Counting Cards with your iPhone, Bad Idea

First a quick reminder that I’m still taking names for the Free Tweetie iPhone Apps from the Setting Up a US iTunes Account in Canada: Round 2 post. Don’t forget comment (over there), or follow & tweet me on Twitter (@ChantelleJoytwt) for your chance to win – I’ll announce winners later this week.

In the meantime if you’re looking to do a bit of recreational gambling, it might be a good idea to leave your iPhone behind. California state officials have alerted Nevada Gaming Board of some very illegal cart-counting in casinos using certain iPhone Apps, and you bet they’re on the watch for people constantly poking at their iPhones while playing Blackjack and they could be arrested.

Recently released are various Apps on iTunes that can either train you to learn to count cards yourself, or track of the card count itself while playing giving you way better odds of winning, like Blackjack Card Counter (pictured above), which boasts of it being reported on by CNN. Bad news for SMS fanatics and constant tweeters, since now there will be extra security for iPhone users.

Although this mostly serves as a warning to us Canadians for anyone planning to visit Vegas, it’s likley since the news is spreading so quickly that Canadian Casinos, like Casino Niagara and the Casino de Montréal (one of the largest casinos in the world, by the way) could get on board, so be careful, and for heavens sake – don’t cheat a Blackjack.

I dont think card counting is necessarily illegal in Canada but the Casino does reserve the right to kick you out and ban you from returning if you are caught

Don’t forget, there is a difference between *you* counting cards and using a device to count cards for you. Plenty of news stories out there now about this, with plenty of details. Basically, there, it is illegal to use a device to count cards for you, it is not illegal for you to count cards on your own, but being in the casino is not a right. It’s their casino. If they don’t like how much you’re winning, and suspect it’s because you’re counting cards, even just in your head, they’ll give you the boot, and are entitled to do so.
