Rogers tells employees to upgrade iTunes 8.1, iPhone 3.0 software imminent

Today Rogers Wireless advised its dealers and re-sellers (Rogers Wireless, Rogers Plus, Wirelesswave, Future Shop, Best Buy, etc) to upgrade their store computers versions of iTunes to version 8.1 version 8.2 (as of June 4, 2009).

The report indicates that it is:

Very important that you upgrade to iTunes version 8.1 8.2 immediately to ensure that you are ready for the upcoming release of the iPhone OS 3.0 software.

Currently, most Rogers dealers were running iTunes 8.0.

rogers-iphone2

The report further describes some of the “100 new features” that will be included in the upcoming iPhone 3.0 software:

  • Search your iPhone
  • Cut, copy, and paste
  • Send photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS
  • Read and compose email and text messages in landscape

Rogers typically issues these bulletins a few days ahead of when they will absolutely be needed so to give their dealers and re-sellers time to implement the change. This means that in a few weeks, all new Rogers iPhone hardware will be running the 3.0 software!

But this may also indicate that there is a change in Rogers iPhone Value packs on the horizon. With the inclusion of MMS in the 3.0 software, Rogers may be changing their currently offered iPhone 3G Value Packs, of which two run for $15, one runs for $20, and one for $35, to include MMS. These value packs currently include 2500 text messages ($15 versions) and unlimited text messages ($20 and $35 versions). As we all know, the current iPhone software, 2.2.1, cannot send MMS, so this will be a welcomed addition.

However, because this is Rogers we’re talking about, would the inclusion of MMS increase the price of these value packs or keep them the same? Or maybe they will be cheaper due to our recent difficult economic times?

I am hoping that MMS gets added to all of these value packs and that the price stays the same! But Rogers is known to raise prices more often than freezing them or reducing them.

What do you guys think?

I really can’t wait to get Cut n Paste and MMS.

But, I still really want to be able to HUP to the new iPhone too. Here’s hoping 3.0 tides me over…

I was talking to a Fido rep yesterday, and he told me that he personally can’t see the rumors of Fido stopping selling iPhone when the next one comes out to be true. He said it would be stupid for them to lose the thousands of iPhone customers and it doesn’t make sense business wise.

I would hope Rogers includes MMS into their existing bundles. I can’t see people willing to pay more for sending MMS! Why not just send an email instead??

Correct me if I am wrong (don’t feel like digging up my contract right now) but doesn’t the value pack say MMS and Text? Or, maybe it was the 6GB plan. I swear it is one or the other because I remember even discussing how redundant it was with both a Rogers employee and afterward, my girlfriend.

Anyone have their contract handy? I checked my online account, but it seems they have changed the wording (maybe in anticipation for this?)

Yes! Finally someone else who wonders the same thing haha. I somehow recall it saying SMS and MMS when I first signed the contract for my iPhone with Rogers along with a 6GB data plan. But now, it’s nowhere to be found.

It wouldn’t really make sense to increase the price of the value packs, to include MMS. Would they make all their current customer upgrade, to be able to use the new firmware? Not likely, but we’ve seen Rogers do some unfavourable things in the past, so who knows.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rogers makes a price adjustment with the addition of MMS.
Rogers should be giving all new customers a free tube of anal lube with every new activation!!!!

@Fraser: none of the iPhone packs include MMS. Because the iPhone currently doesn’t officially support MMS, the value packs don’t have them

@MikeM: I hear you! I hope the price doesn’t increase, but if it does, they will upgrade everyones value packs, even if you don’t have 3.0. This is similar to when the $10 value pack a year ago turned to $11 and they charged every one of their customers $1 more per month by changing the packs on peoples account from $10 to $11.

@X1Zero: my iPhone pack has 10,000 MMS messages included… I will check my bill to get the name of it and post here. I signed up for the package in November/December of 2008.

You most likely have the $15 Smartphone pack that had a promotion a while back that increase texts and MMS to 10,000.

While compatible with iphone, it’s not an “iPhone” value pack as it does not include visual voicemail.

Sending a pic in a email is fine if you’re sending to another iPhone or smartphone. But, how do you send to a dumbphone? Yes, in know about every phone having SK email addy. It would still be easier of the iphone has MMS. And for those trying to send MMS to a iPhone, it would be cool not having to make sure to send to the persons email and to just send to the number, like every other phone.

MMS is such a basic feature that comes on even the worst, ugliest phones. It is a shame that it has taken this long to finally makes it way to the iPhone.

I posted this article’s link on a couple sites and a few people replied saying that the latest betas require iTunes 8.2, NOT 8.1. Is this just a typo then or is this article just wrong?

Because if they are supposedly requiring 8.1 and 8.2 is needed then this makes no sense!

X1Zero
Reply to  Jonk

The BETAS currently require 8.2 yes, but whether the OFFICIAL 3.0 will require 8.2 or not is yet to be seen. If it does, then Rogers will make their stores upgrade to 8.2. You have to remember, Beta 1, 2, and 3 of the 3.0 software did not require iTunes 8.2. Only beta 4 and 5 did.

Also note that Rogers stores are not SYNCING your content for you, they are only activating the phone. That means, iTunes 8.1 will be okay well through OS 3.0 because Rogers Store use a special “Activation Module” of iTunes for their iPhone sales. However, if you want to SYNC content, then yes, you will need iTunes 8.2

So to answer your question, because we are specifically talking about Rogers here, the people that were posting where you posted this article are wrong.

I talked to my girlfriend about it and she remembers MMS being included too. It says it on the pamphlets that were used during the first sign ups. I am trying to find mine, but we recently moved and it could be anywhere.

One thing is for certain, when the firmware gives me MMS, I sure as hell will be holding them to it.
