Rogers/Fido Group SMS On iPhone = Billed As MMS
The Rogers/Fido news just keeps getting better and better…
The iPhone 3G/3GS can finally send MMS messages which are usually defined as picture or video messages. Apple Inc however further adds contact information, map locations, and other small items to the MMS definition. Although one definition that is not widely known about is Group SMS or Group Text Messages.

Group SMS = MMS
When you turn on your Messages app in the iPhone, whether it be the iPhone 2G/3G/3GS, and you begin typing a message, you can send that message to multiple recipients by simply adding more names to the “To:” field. If you only send the message to one person, the iPhone considers it a single text message and that is how it is represented on your Rogers/Fido bill. Easy.
However, if you input two or more names to send the message to two or more recipients, the iPhone calls this a ‘Group SMS’ and for whatever reason, considers the message a MMS message. As such, the Group SMS message is represented on your Rogers/Fido bill as a MMS message.

So what does this mean?
If you do not have a text message plan with Rogers/Fido, your outgoing text messages are charged at $0.15/text message. Your incoming text messages will also be charged at $0.15/text message as of July 7, 2009. If you do have a text message package, then all incoming and outgoing text messages are free of charge and will use the amount you have in the package.
If you do not have a MMS message plan with Rogers/Fido, your outgoing MMS messages are charged at $0.50/MMS message. Your incoming MMS messages will also be charged at $0.50/MMS message as of July 7, 2009. If you do have a MMS message package, then all incoming and outgoing MMS messages are free of charge and will use the amount you have in the package.
What this amounts to is if you do not have a text/MMS message package on your Rogers/Fido account, every time you send a single text message to a single recipient, you are charged at $0.15/text message. However, when you send a single text message to two or more people, it becomes a Group SMS message and you will be billed at $0.50/message because the iPhone and Rogers/Fido consider the Group SMS message as a MMS message.

What can you do about this?
The only thing you really can do is make sure that you have both a text and MMS message package on your account. You can check out some of the bundled ones here for Rogers.
But you know, you can always leave it up to Rogers/Fido to not make its customers aware of something like this. So if you have been sending a lot of Group SMS messages lately, this may explain why your bill has extra charges on it and you may be due for a call to Rogers/Fido to get some money back.

I just called rogers and they said there is an internal memo going around to state that this is not true and it will still be sms. I got them to put a note on my account to say that I was told it was sms and I will not incur mms charges (I do not mms on my account)
Hopefully they are right, but I dont trust anyone at rogers.
The best thing to trust is your bill. That is where it counts
Thank you for the update X1. I, for once, am speechless and don’t have more to say.
(I will say this: I came to Fido from Telus, and was happy to move because the customer service was horrible there. Fido’s not perfect but at least they didn’t stick me with a handset they knew didn’t work and was discontinued after 2 months.)
I’d should be in the safe zone. Got myself unlimited text and picture/video messaging package. Thanks for the info though!
isnt this a breach in contract as there changing the pricing which would allow someone to leave there contract??
Unfortunately no.
Your contract only covers your basic voice plan and the included features therein.
I send group SMS all the time. I have never been charged for this. I’ve had all three iPhones.
I am getting tired of these cell phone company games…. I pray for more competition!
When I got my phone the guy at the Rogers store said my existing iPhone bundle has 2500 sent SMS and 1000 sent picture and video. Even though picture and video was not available on the iPhone last year when I got the plan.
His comment was, “That’s how it works with Blackberries”. But I’m worried that maybe this plan does not include MMS because original iPhone value packs were for phones that didn’t support it.
I hate calling Rogers to verify because you have to wait on hold too long. Anyone know the answer?
If this is the old $15 value pack, I was told by Rogers customer service that it does not include any MMS.
If this is the pack you have, let me know if you hear differently…
There were two “old” $15 value packs.
$15 smartphone value pack and $15 iPhone Value pack with Visual Voicemail.
He has the former.
If this is true. It’s complete bullshit.
@Mike
what you have is the Smartphone Value Pack and the MMS in that plan has you covered.
Always something to get your money in THEIR pocket!
Complete Bullshit. I have a $15 Value pack that includes 25,000 texts. And you’re telling me if I now want to send an SMS to 2 people I’m not taking 2 of 25,000 texts but a .50 cent charge??
And now that we have MMS, you want us with $15 packs to get a $20 pack and lose our $5 Monthly credit ($10/month for Value Pack) just to send MMS’s!?
To hell with Group SMS, to hell with Rogers SMS.
Hey guys,
Remember back when we were able to switch our 6GB/$30 per month to this Iphone Data Value Pack? Does the MMS include in this value pack? My bill statement on paper and online doesn’t reflect this…I am wondering if I am getting charged for this…I only sent one MMS so far. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
You can still do that, but you will lose the 6GB of data.
The iPhone data value pack is $35 (instead of $30), and includes 500MB (instead of 6GB) but then also has voicemail, callerID, unlimited SMS/MMS
Your information is slightly incorrect. I believe this is an iPhone BUG rather than a rogers issue. You can simply go to settings, and turn off MMS, and then if you add contacts to SMS messages, it will stay as Group SMS (the iPhone screen updates to reflect what it thinks you are sending).
I have been sending texts to multiple recipients (ie: “Group SMS”) on my iPhone for months and my bills have never shown anything other than regular text messages.
This is total crap!!!!! I already pay for 2500 text a month plus visual voicemail which is $15 month and now ROBBERS wants more money!!!!! No way to hell with mms!!!!!! I can hardly wait for New Years eve when ROBBERS sticks us with a nice Happy New Years tethering fee!!!!! Bend over and keep smiling please!!!!!!! Hurry up competition I want out!!!!!!
READ MY POST PLEASE!!
To prevent this: turn off MMS in the options.
Basically, this is a change in the 3.0 update. So if you didn’t see it last month or ever it is because it’s a new option.
WHY?
If you send a group SMS to 10 people it costs $1.50. However, send a group MMS to 10 people it will cost $0.50. iPhone software is trying to save you money. But it doesn’t if you already have a SMS message plan.
I called Rogers and have been billed for a group SMS as an MMS. I promise you, after I sent it, they told me they charged me. (they noted my file so they won’t charge me)
When you send a group SMS read the top bar where it shows the send status. If afterwards it says GROUP MMS ….you just been billed $0.50.
I’ve been using 3.0 since the 8th and my current bill shows no additional charges for Group SMS. Just regular texts. And yes, I have MMS switched off in the options menu.
Since you have your MMS switched off, it will NOT automatically switch to MMS. Hence, no charges.
The main article seems to disagree in regards to “Group SMS”.
i’ve been using the $12 Value Packs for a long time, and after they “updated” to $12, this is what they wrote on their web site…
wireless essential services and save. Add a Value Pack to your voice plan.
Includes:
Call Display with Name Display1
Enhanced Voicemail
WhoCalledâ„¢
Mobile Backup3
I don’t even see any sms anymore! anyone know why? do they just cut it?
my HTC Dream does this sometimes too. Maybe it’s decided based on how long the msg is, or how many people you send to?
A short message to a few people is a SMS it seems, but i sent a 4 page msg to 10 people, and it was sent as an MMS. Which sucks because MMS isn’t as reliable as SMS.
hey just to tell you that this news is not true at all… i called rogers to know and they told me that 1 MMS = 1 SMS thats it.
ActivateMMS2G in Cydia! Allows iPhone 2G users to send MMS through Apple SMS.app Just a heads up! https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=5711
Rogers told me that a MMS can have multiple recipients and will only charged as 1.
what do these acronyms SMS…MMS…RSS all stand for?
