Rogers Adds MMS To iPhone Value Packs!

So we were briefly discussing the other day about whether or not Rogers would be adding MMS to the existing iPhone Value Packs and whether or not there will be a price increase. Well, it has been announced and it seems that MMS is being added to all of the Rogers Value Packs in anticipation of OS 3.0. It will come in the form of Unlimited Picture and Video messages and the prices across select iPhone Value Packs will go up by $5.00 on June 2.

2

So the price ended up increasing after all, but they added both Unlimited Text messages and Unlimited Picture and Video messages to select Value Packs. For updated plans and recommendations, check out our Rogers plans update here. For just the Value Pack changes alone, check out below for the breakdown of each:

$20 Smartphone Value Pack (was $15)

  • Caller Display with Name Display
  • Enhanced Voicemail
  • WhoCalled Service
  • Unlimited sent/received Text Messages (was 2500)
  • Unlimited sent/received Picture and Video Messages (was 1000)

—–

$20 iPhone Visual Voicemail Value Pack (was $15)

  • Caller Display
  • Visual Voicemail
  • WhoCalled Service
  • Unlimited sent/received Text Messages (was 2500)
  • Unlimited sent/received Picture and Video Messages (Did not have an MMS feature before)

—–

$35 iPhone Data Value Pack (Price stayed the same) (Price increases to $40 as of August 5, 2009)

  • Caller Display
  • Visual Voicemail
  • 500MB of Data
  • WhoCalled Service
  • Unlimited sent/received Text Messages
  • Unlimited sent/received Picture and Video Messages (Did not have an MMS feature before)

—–

So, what does this mean for you? Well, let’s summarize.

  • If you are an existing Rogers customer and already have one of the previous packs and want to keep it, nothing changes for you, but you will not have MMS if you have one of the previous iPhone Value packs (the old $15 or $30 or $35 one). To get the new one, read below!
  • If you are an existing Rogers customer and already have the previous $15 iPhone Visual Voicemail Value Pack, then you will have to change it to the $20 pack in order to get the unlimited text and the MMS feature.
  • If you are an existing Rogers customer and already have the previous $35 iPhone Data Value Pack, then you will have to change it to the newly updated $35 pack in order to get the unlimited text and the MMS feature.
  • If you are an existing Rogers customer and already have the much older $30 iPhone Data Value Pack, then you will have to change it to the new $35 pack in order to get the unlimited text and the MMS feature.
  • If you are an existing Rogers customer and already have the previous $15 Smartphone Value Pack, then you will have to change it to the $20 pack in order to get the unlimited texts and MMS. Otherwise, you stay with 2,500 texts and 1,000 MMS.
  • If you are new to Rogers, the above are your choices for iPhone Value Packs.

So there you have it!

I am extremely curious to hear what you all think about these changes.

It’s nice that messages are now unlimited, but I would have preferred that an option be given to me to increase the messaging. It seems however that the $35 option offers the best value as it now includes MMS at no additional cost and the 500MB data is really only $15, where standalone it is $25.

I will not buy an iphone unless they offer the 6GB plan again. maybe they are doing me a favour by not offering it.

Why isn’t it a good deal?
I personally use less than 400mb a month, so I find the $35 plan to be a great offer.
The alternative is paying $20 for a value pack and $25 for 500 mb of data. Its $35 vs $45.

I just spoke to a rogers rep and got this plan. Before I had 1gb/30$ and 11$ value pack. I thought there might be a problem because I was actually downgrading but it was so easy and smooth to do.

Before I was on rogers I was with bell and I tell ya that was a bloody nightmare to deal with. Anyone who complains about rogers is either in a) some freak circumstance situation or b) complains about everything and have never experienced the bell/telus nightmare before.

Go rogers!

I find it annoying they are increasing the cost of the value packs weeks before OS 3.0 comes out and we can actually use the new features. I think people should call and demand a discount for the first month or however long until 3.0 comes out. How can this even be allowed? Great we now get unlimited texts but we still can’t use MMS until 3.0

Mirth

Agreed. As a developer for the iPhone running the beta 3.0, so far those functions have not activated. I’m going to assume– and this is probably a really bad thing to do, as I don’t want to start rumours– that the billing will be pro-rated to the release date of 3.0 and when the features are turned on.

The new price may show in the literature and website for new purchases, but the existing customers can’t be billed for services that are not being provided.

Again, time will tell. I’m actually starting to be scared to look at my cell bills.

Name Display:

Thanks for the update – but Rogers have said that Caller Display with Name Display, particularly the name display, is NOT available on an iphone? Does anyone get Name Display working (that is not already in their contacts – as this name will come up if you have added it.)
Thanks, matty

Data usage in the USA. 3 Million dollars equivalent.

This is a little off the post – but I went down to the US and rang up Rogers to find the cost of data while roaming in the US – 3 cents per KB. So, do the math – my home internet plan is 100gig for about $55. If you hypothetically were to download 100gig in the USA at standard roaming charges you would be charged 3 Million Dollars!! Now that is criminal. That’s even way more than the cost of printer ink (if you work that out by the liter it can come in at $800 to $1000 per liter).

Maybe these observations would be the subject of a new thread Gary?

thanks, matty

A true observation, but no rational person would download 100GB’s on a mobile phone. If so, they are looking to be charged.

Also, X1Zero is not Gary 🙂

I just got off the phone with Rogers, and after asking about the iPhone 3G New Value packs with the MMS, all he had to say was “the iphone can’t do picture or video messaging”. I wish Rogers employees were slightly more up to date with things like this. But I forwarded this guy to http://www.iphoneincanada.ca and basically all he had to say was, “You can’t belive everything you read online”. Anyways, I wasn’t going to bother continuing on a conversation. So for all those out there who want to get this on their plan right now, you’re just going to have to wait a little longer!

The iPhone CAN do MMS with OS 3.0. Thousands of people are already running 3.0 (me included) and have been using MMS.

the 6GB plan was good, but seriously 500Mb’s is more then enough. the only way you would even go over 500mbs would be if you enjoy Youtube a LOT or stream radio hours a day. Other then that, With smart use of Wifi while at home, i dont see many people ever going over 500.

Also a word on the release of 3.0 Release, word on the street is its going to be Center Stage opening on June 8’th Apple convention meeting in San Fransisco and should be made public that day or the next

You know, I used to agree that 500MB is enough but our own blogger iPhone Fan manages to blow through 800MB per month easily.

However, yes, for most users, 500MB is enough. 🙂

Yes, i must admit there is a select few where they go over 500mb’s but thats why you can pay for extra, but my guess is that 80% of all users are under 500mbs

No, people with the My5 plans or My5 add on will not be charged for outgoing MMS because My5 covers that. However, if you send someone an MMS who is not on your My5, then you pay.

The 6GB plan has no relation to messages sent from your iPhone.

Well After Doing a ton of Research, and talking to many rogers employees. This Post is true, but the details are mixed up a bit. YES the $35 dollar plan was put in motion to include MMS messaging, but it was included to the “Smartphone” Value pack for the new Revolution phone. the $35 Dollar “Iphone” Value pack Although the same in Every single way excluding MMS is a seperate pack. and they are not willing to apply the Smartphone pack to the Iphone although the iphone is classed as a smartphone.

So there we have it. 2 different $35 plans, Iphones the one that didnt get the MMS lol lame eh? you can check it out on the Rogers Website as well
Under the “$35 smartphone value pack” They posted a new details line that wasnt there days ago saying “If looking for a Data Value Pack for iPhone devices please refer to $35 iPhone Data Value Pack page.”

wasnt there a few days ago, so i would imagin they added it because of this post, as well as a few others talking about that plan, and the loads of calls they are getting from it lol

I have now spoken to three different reps and have gotten three different answers regarding mms.
Rep 1 – said I didn’t need to change anything.
Rep 2 – this was tech support, said the feature would be enabled with 3.0, but I would be charged extra
Rep 3 – accounts again, started with, “On Friday you’ll have to phone Apple and ask to have your phone upgraded to 3.0”. She told me it would be 50 cents per picture message, but obviously I’m reluctant to trust her reliability.
Anyone?

X1Zero

So what does that tell you about Rogers’ customer service consistency?
The place you want to come is here.

The answer is:

If you have a value pack that includes MMS, you’re fine.
If you have a value pack that does not include MMS, you need to change and you will pay more for this value pack.
You will only be charged per message if you do not have MMS on your value pack.
Obviously you do not have to call Apple to get 3.0. LOL!

I have the old $30 Data plan, which when I signed up they were offering a $10 discount for the full 3 year contract. So I only pay $20. This includes 10,000 text messages and no MMS. I don’t have MMS plan,
I’m asking because even if you don’t have a SMS plan, receiving them is free
so receiving MMS should be free as well!

Man I hate rogers, did anybody see the front page of the Ottawa citizen today ?
it stated that TXT messages are around 4900% mark up.

I refuse to pay for Data, it’s too expensive, and wifi is everywhere.
and if someone has a 6G plan and they still charge them to send MMS is simply mind boggling. come on!!

why would rogers charge per protocol ? it’s ALL DATA!! all l of it, it’s all the same to them on their network, it’s just marketed with different names so they can charge everybody for every single feature that a network is capable of doing.

ATTENTION: ROGERS!! you sell data. that’s it that’s all!
why can’t you charge us a fair rate for a any service per kb that it really takes up on your network ?

the day will come when a “wireless voice plan” wont exist anymore, and cheap unlimited voice will be available on a cheap unlimited data plan with every feature a phone is capable of doing.
how can you justify charging extra for features like caller ID ?? on a digital network, all that info is sent regardless of the plan. it doesn’t cost them anything more. in fact they have to block it if you don’t pay for it. so they actually have to spend money/time blocking the service for the customer that doesn’t pay them.

i need a beer.

Vern

Yeah, what’s really sick is a la carte data rates. (3 cents/kb) This should DEFINITELY be illegal.

Minimum Plan = 500 MB
$25/mo

A La Carte = $.03/KB = $30/MB
500 MB = $15,000

Seriously? If you don’t want to pay a monthly minimum of $25, you get charged at 600x the rate? 60,000% more??

Rogers would just say, “Sure, it’s a no-brainer. Pay us $25/mo even if you don’t plan to use our service regularly. Think about the *savings*”

Sounds like paying a mobster for “protection” to me.

Bah. Rogers.

I've called into Rogers back in July several times confirming if MMS was included for free if I were to upgrade my iPhone hardware to 3.0 OS. They've confirmed it more than once with me over the phone that my Data Value Pack ($35) includes everything stated above (free text, picture, video msgs). When I checked my bill today it states the rate has gone up to $40! After speaking to the agent on the phone about this she said she couldn't do anything about bringing the rate back down to $35, even though I was told on numerous occasions what I had signed up for was $35! She said she could give me a credit of $10 for two months. I didn't give in – that's nothing compared to how much revenue they will generate from my account for 3 + yrs. I've been a subscriber of Rogers for over 5 years now. This is ridiculous how they cannot adjust the rate back down after they can clearly see I was in fact advised the package was $35 and included MMS. How can they just change the price on me like that? That is not fair and it is not what I had signed up for. I'm due for an appointment with a supervisor. If it cannot get resolved I'll be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
