ZAGG ZAGGsparq 2.0: iPhone/USB Battery Backup Charger Review

By now you’ve probably heard of ZAGG, the company behind the popular invisibleSHIELD protective skins. I’ve used the invisibleSHIELD for my iPhone, iPhone 3G, and my current iPhone 3GS (and my MacBook and iPad!). I have my iPhone 4 invisibleSHIELDS on the way.

ZAGG also makes other accessories too, and one of the most highly anticipated is their recent release of the ZAGGsparq 2.0 battery backup charger.

The original ZAGGsparq had some units plagued by issues and the team at ZAGG fixed these issues in their second revision, the ZAGGsparq 2.0. I’ve been using this iPhone backup battery for the past little while so here’s my experience with the unit.

ZAGGsparq 2.0 Battery Backup Charger Review

The ZAGGsparq 2.0 features are as follows:

  • 6,000 mAh Lithium Polymer
  • Has the power to charge an iPhone four times
  • 4 yellow lights indicate power level, 25%-50%-75%-100%
  • Has the ability to charge multiple USB devices simultaneously
  • Fixed output: 2x 1000mA @ 5V
  • Power Source: AC 100-240 v/50/60 Hz
  • Physical Size 3.5 x 3.5 x 1 inches
  • Weight .54 lbs. (245 grams)

What’s inside the box:

  • ZAGGsparq 2.0 charger
  • EU plug adapter
  • Instruction card

Upon unboxing the ZAGGsparq 2.0, I noticed that the packaging is quite minimal. You’ll see the box is about the same size as the ZAGGsparq 2.0 unit itself, and inside there’s no extra “stuffing” that you sometimes find from other companies. Good job.

I picked up the ZAGGsparq 2.0 and it did have some solid weight to it, but it wasn’t overly heavy. At 245 grams, that’s comparable to a big bag of Lay’s potato chips (I know, what a comparison eh?). On the side you’ll see four amber LED lights that indicate the amount of battery remaining (just push the button and they’ll light up), and two USB ports. These USB ports will allow you to charge any device that’s powered via USB. This unit works perfectly with the iPad and will charge it from zero to about 60%.

As you can see below, the ZAGGsparq 2.0 is just slightly bigger than an Apple Airport Express. The design of the unit looks like a page from Apple. It’s simple, clean, and very shiny. I did notice the unit picks up dust quite easily due to the plastic finish.

The ZAGGsparq Packs One Heckuva Punch

The ZAGGsparq 2.0 will enable you to charge two USB devices at the same time. With its massive 6000 mAh lithium polymer battery, it will charge your iPhone up to four full times! If you’re traveling, the ZAGGsparq 2.0 will be a godsend. Never again will you feel the stress of running out of battery. We’ve all been there. The ZAGGsparq 2.0 changes this.

As I’m writing this review, I’m on a BC Ferry tethering my iPhone data plan. We know tethering eats up your battery like no tomorrow–but with my iPhone plugged into the ZAGGsparq 2.0 I can tether for hours and not worry about a thing!

I was able to charge my iPhone 3GS, and even my RichardSolo 1800 battery backup–say what? That’s right! If you don’t want to carry your ZAGGsparq 2.0, you can use it to charge another battery! With dual USB charging ports, the possibilities are really endless. Handheld games, digital cameras, Blackberrys and other cellphones will also be able to get topped up.
