Hotmail To Receive ActiveSync Support For iOS Devices

This is absolutely epic news for Hotmail users who own an iDevice.

CNET is reporting that next week on August 30, 2010 (Monday), Microsoft will deliver on the features promised as part of the latest update to Hotmail. The epic feature is Exchange ActiveSync which will allow Hotmail users to receive push e-mail for free on their mobile devices such as an iPhone.

There are many devices out there that support ActiveSync for connecting to an Exchange Server, such as the iPhone, but this new Hotmail update will be very useful to owners of the latest tech such as the iPhone 4, where users can have dual ActiveSync accounts.

Also, it is worth noting that the new Hotmail update can be experienced by users that do not have an Exchange Server but as long as they have a device that supports ActiveSync.

I have many colleagues who have been waiting a long time to receive some kind of push/IMAP support with their Hotmail accounts, so this new Hotmail update has been a long time coming.

Are you a Hotmail user? What do you think of this new update?

Nice can’t wait! I’ve been using my Hotmail for over 10yrs now in addition to my Gmail account so this is great news that I can get my Hotmail instantly instead of waiting 15mins! 😛

Its nice BUT you can only have 1 active sync account on an iphone… so if you have a gmail and hotmail, or 2 hotmail, or what ever… your screw 😐

Not true. With IOS 4 you can have multiple.
They will kill your battery very fast though.

Maybe this will force Google to get their shit together and fix their push service. No delete and bad sync when used in conjunction with IMAP on other devices.

I killed my hotmail account not to long ago due to Massive amounts of junk mail, and ad bots adding themselfs to my contact lists. Got MobileMe, and google now

Mobile Me = $$$ each year. Hotmail = free. I used to have problems with hackers sending SPAM from my Hotmail but I changed my password. Much easier than changing my email address.

Hackers wasn’t the problem. It’s just the malware that gets picked up
over the net targeting hotmail. With all that MobileMe offers, I have
no regret paying the money for it ^_^.

Another issue I had was one of my friends would get a virus or
something, and it would send all their msn contacts spam mail using
their address, and IMs over messenger

WooHoo! After using Hotmail for around 15 years, since day one, I was about to close my account because no push. The native iPhone email client was fine but I really wanted more. Now I got it… 🙂

I’ve been using MBox Mail with my Iphone for several months now with Push notifications. It works great, but I will be interested in seeing how this integrates with the iPhone.
I will definitely try it out, but if MBox Mail seems better, I will keep using it. With a free 25GB Skydrive with every Hotmail account, there’s still plenty of reasons to not switch away form Hotmail!

wow, your account must get so much spam. I’ve gone though 2 or 3 hotmail accounts since 1996 because I kept getting tons of spam.

my gmail is my main account, but I have it pull all my hotmail (that I seldom use anymore) so I can still get on my iOS devices.

security though obscurity. Wait till Mac’s are 90% of the market mobile me will have the same issues. 🙂

Just for the record, I too use MobileMe and think it’s the bomb-diggity. Totally worth the price of admission.

I use Mbox as well with my touch around the house and I find it works great.

Gmail is much better than Hotmail. I switched to them years ago and would never go back. Also, the mail client on iphone/mac is great, i use IMAP to sync everything there.

The good news is Mac’s won’t be 90% of the market, so why worry?

In Hotmail if I get an email, I read it on my iPhone, then why when I open hotmail in a web browser it still shows unread. I hate that. Is there any way to solve it?

I have two exchange accounts configured on my iPhone… I don’t find it to kill the battery any faster compared to what I get when only one exchange account is used…

This actually is the solution to it!

i’m using an app called mbox mail by fluent factory

it syncs with hotmail and pushes e-mails; also updates hotmail.com so all my messages are indeed ‘read’

I use that app too. The only problem is that it is literally parsing the data from the HTML version of the site. Any major changes to the hotmail site design and mbox mail dies.

An “official” solution such as this is much more ideal.

They give up eventually. I have had a hotmail account for well over ten years and get a maximum of 10 (an average of 3-5) pieces of spam that I hadn’t signed up for (that could easily be unsubscribed from).

I just keep my junk filter at max and have no problems.

Yahoo! is allegedly suppose to do Push but Rogers Yahoo! never has. Any news on this???

yes until monday i fiound i had the same issue as you. what i do is after reading or deleting an email i press hte refresh and it rechecks for mail and you see it updating. then it shows up as read on hotmail.com. also, you have to go to advanced settings and choose delete from server.

Gotta agree with that. Though I hardly use my Hotmail account anymore, due to lack of support, I’ve noticed that the spamming (or at least the spam filter) has gotten better.

Should be interesting, finally having hotmail on my iPhone!
