Mobile Substrate and Winterboard Updated

If you are at all familiar with jailbreaking an iOS device, you know Mobile Substrate is required to run pretty much any tweak you can get in Cydia. It is a support framework that many developers use to make their tweaks work in iOS. Mobile Substrate has just been updated to version 0.9.3997. This version brings a great new feature, that many jailbreakers will be excited about.

This new version of Mobile Substrate allows you to bypass broken extensions on startup, by holding down the volume up button when your iOS device is booting up. This is especially useful if you have installed a tweak that isn’t working and has caused your device to go into a “boot loop”. This is when your device will not start up at all, sometimes causing you to restore your device and lose your jailbreak. By holding down the volume up button when booting, Mobile Substrate is completely disabled, allowing to get into Cydia and uninstall the faulty tweak.

Winterboard is the widely popular jailbreak app for theming your iDevice. Just about any theme is applied with Winterboard. A lot of jailbreakers  have stopped using it, due to it slowing down iOS. For me performance and function, comes before style and fashion. This latest version (0.9.3905) doesn’t really have any new features, but has a bunch of bug fixes.

  • 5.x: Solve SpringBoard Scroll Lag (only with “SummerBoard Mode” off)
  • Default SummerBoard Mode to Off
  • 4+5: TimeStyle, PerPage, IconAlpha
  • 4+5: Respring Fix
  • 5.x: Last Ditch kill -KILL Respring
  • 4+5: HTML Wallpaper Multi-Touch
  • 2+3: Fixed SpringBoard Crashes
  • Corrected Order of UISound Stack
  • Use Fallback/* to Wildcard Theme

Saurik, the developer of Winterboard and Cydia, also posted this on the Changes page of Winterboard, in Cydia:

Sadly, despite attempts to reach out on forums and even with personal pleas by SMS, we have been unable to get major theme artists to test any of our beta builds of WinterBoard so we can get feedback on any potential issues.

Therefore, in addition to this release having been delayed by over a month, we have been able to get almost no verification that it actually still works.

(If any theme artists are reading this, I will point you to the main depiction for details on the IRC channel we use to discuss bugs and development. ;P)

Winterboard has been working really smooth for me, today, on my iPhone 4S. If you like to use themes on your jailbroken iOS device, check out these updates. Hopefully things will be running smoother for you now. These updates are, of course, free in Cydia now.
