TomTom: Camera-Mounted Vehicles in Canada to Clarify Maps Only, Not ‘Street View’
Earlier in the week we demonstrated how turn-by-turn works in Canada on iOS 6 on the new Apple Maps app.
With the departure of Google Maps and the loss of Street View, many wondered if the newly supplied map data from TomTom in Apple Maps would ever include such a service. Numerous readers spotted camera-mounted vehicles decked out in TomTom graphics driving along Canadian streets–alluding that a ‘street view’ service might be coming.
We reached out to TomTom and asked them about these cars, the cameras and what their purpose was. Here’s what TomTom PR had to say:
The vans are taking 360° shots around themselves so we can confirm street/road signs, road markings (such as lanes), and the geometry of the roads. This is used for internal purposes only and is not accessible to the public.
When we asked specifically if a ‘street view’ service was coming, they said they “do not offer a ‘street view’ like service”. So these vans are nothing new, as they have been also spotted before down in the US.
So for those wondering about ‘street view’ coming from TomTom for Apple Maps, there’s nothing much to talk about. That is until Apple announces such a service out of the blue, but until then the official word is nothing is coming.

You know I could really give a rats ass if it has street view. If you can’t navigate by turn by turn and your eyes seeing your destination….your are dumb. And now it’s time to place your hand on ur head and shake it in shame..just saying
Your are so smart!!! Street view isn’t just for directions either. Maybe you should keep your comments to “youself”.
Splurt splurt bud go tell your mommy
You know they could just make these images public too. After a lot of legal stuff is all said and done.
But Apple has bigger priorities with their Maps
Google will release a maps app anyways if they already haven’t, so for all the people so worried that apple maps won’t be good enough it will be alright 😉
Google tried to offer a crippled version of its Maps on the iPhone to make it look like the Android was superior with its Turn by turn. This backfired big time. Now watch Google adding the feature in their next release
Sorry but no street view is a deal breaker so apple pony up to google to get that data. Or just another broken promis from apple and I’ve been an apple user since my Performa way back.
Street views not that big a deal only really use it on the computer not my iPhone, all you really need is an address n your turn by turn nav… And googles street view photos are sooooo old
