Netflix Debuts New ‘Post-Play’ Experience to Help Keep You Watching

Netflix has just announced on their blog a new feature called ‘post-play’ that will help viewers to continue watching after they have finished a movie or TV episode. Here’s how they explain post-play:

When you finish watching an episode of a TV show, we’ll minimize the credits and tee-up the next episode. If you do nothing, the next episode will start to play in 15 seconds. You can also stop it to get more information or select another episode.

When you finish watching a movie, we’ll minimize the credits and offer you three recommendations to try next. If those don’t suit you, you can always go directly to search from post-play or go back to browsing to find something else.

I think this is an awesome idea. With ‘binge viewing’ that occurs nowadays, we can’t just watch ONE episode of any TV series. For those that have just started watching Breaking Bad on Netflix (or Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Community, etc), you know what I’m talking about. Now, it’ll make it easier to continue watching another episode, and lose another weekend.

Here’s a video preview of how it works:

Netflix says ‘post-play’ will soon be made available to ‘over devices soon’, which will surely include the Apple TV and the Netflix iOS app. Currently it is only available for the web and the PS3. At the end of May, the company updated their iOS app to have better on-screen controls.

Hasn’t it already been doing this for months? It just looks slightly different.

Wasn’t this already in place for a few weeks now?
The last time I watched something on my laptop I noticed this, which is awesome!

To be able to create playlist, or “to watch” list or whatever the name you want, this is what we want… can’t believe there’s still no options for that!

Yes there is. Where have you been over the past 2 years?

Interesting! They probably were doing early testing on the PS3. I still want playlists.

I noticed that with the new releases we get the ‘good ones’ at the same time as US.

The US still get a ton more movies that I have never heard of before though but nothing worth VPN’ing to watch.

Why is there still no option to remove titles from the Recently Viewed list?

This has also been on the 360 interface for quite some time as well. It is often very nice, but it can be frustrating if you don’t WANT to watch what’s coming up, as it just starts going…

You have 15 seconds to stop it from playing the next video…
