SPIGEN: iPhone 5 Steinheil Series Screen Protector [REVIEW]

For me, Spigen’s Steinheil is the king of all screen protector films. Every time I buy a new iOS device, I know I have to get one. As of now, all my iPhones and iPads have got one of these Steinheil screen protectors and I couldn’t be more satisfied with their durability, scratch resistance and amazing clarity. Now, it’s time to show you how it shines on the new iPhone 5. Check it out!

The Steinheil screen protector series for iPhone 5 features four varieties, each of which has a unique characteristic:

  • Ultra Crystal (25% thicker, clear hard coated film)
  • Ultra Fine (A slightly textured film with 30% increased light transmittance)
  • Ultra Oleophobic (Oleophobic coating, oil resistant coating)
  • Ultra Optics (Matte film, anti-fingerprint)

I chose the Ultra Crystal ($13.99) film for my iPhone 5 for its immaculate clarity and easier installation due to slightly harder surface. The package includes a couple of screen protector films, a squeegee, a micro fiber cloth and also four dust removal stickers which are actually quite handy if you get specs of lint or dust underneath the protector during application. All you do is lift up the protector, with a pin if you have to, and then use the dust removal stickers to remove the particles underneath. (Yeah, it works!)

As you can see in the photos above, all the cutouts are perfectly aligned. Just make sure you do the install in a dust free environment. Remember to close the windows and shut off any fans before you begin the application. Once you get it right, you’ll feel as if there’s no screen protector at all. There is absolutely no blurriness, no rainbow effects or any kind of interference with touch-screen responsiveness.

So, if you’ve got the new iPhone already, this is the thing you need to get next. Highly recommended!

I’m really glad you reviewed this. I had the same one on my iPhone 4 and it was easily the best screen protector out there. I did a lot of research and this was the one I chose. They deserve the praise.

what about the Glas.T? Do they have one for iphone 5 yet?

Not yet but from my iPhone 4S experience, both offer the same level of clarity. However, the GLAS.t tends to chip off rather easily from the edges unless you’re using a bumper case with it!

curious is it on par or better than the one made from Power Support? Anyone?

ive used and liked power support, but they arent as durable as steinheil (they scratch easier)

if i dont have a steinheil handy, power support is my number 2 if that means anything

Sold. Just ordered it. Power Support is becoming too expensive due to ridiculous shipping cost (which cost more than the film itself so why bother) and slow to market.

they sell power support at the apple stores… i take it your not close to one?

i use power support because i can buy retail… so if your ordering online anyways then steinheil is a no brainer for sure

pay attention during the install, dont rush, it aint hard, but like all screens it takes nothing to get dust under there

Yeah, watch out for the dust, you have to install it quickly without hesitating

The apple store in Toronto only carries the anti-glare ones and not the crystal version which I want for my iPhone 4, 4S. Power Support is too slow so I’m on board with Spigen. Hope it wouldn’t be disappointed.

I have a Wrapsol iPhone 5 review coming. Usman tells me it’s very comparable to Wrapsol.

Absolutely! Just make sure you get that install right.

Wrapsol ULTRA is equally good too. However, you get only one Wrapsol film for $14.95 while you get a pair for $13.99 with SGP!

Where/when can we buy this in store and where to find the double sided one?

How do these hold up to scratches? I usually use ZAGG, which I’ve never had scratch, but these look interesting and since I’m still awaiting ZAGG shipment I might order one of these. Just curious on how it holds up to scratches though.

Thanks!

Does it have a tacky feeling like the Zagg?
Personally, I’ve always loved Gelaskins’ screen protector. Felt like there was nothing on. But they don’t have a full iP 5 version just yet.

How would this compare to the reapply-able Skinomi screen protectors that come with a lifetime replacement warranty and are available just for around $3 on Amazon ?

I have a case that kinda wraps a bit over the front face. Would this screen interfere with that?

$5.00 for shipping seems a little steep to me ?

$5 shipping is ‘cheap’ compared to what other companies charge for shipping similar skins.

So tried the privacy Clarivue, lasted 2 days.
Got the Zagg smudge free, jury’s still out.

This one IS tempting though…

I don’t really understand the need for screen protectors. Isn’t the fibre optic glass the most scratch-resistant glass in existence? (Or something like that?) I’ve owned three iPhones (3GS, 4, and now 5) and have never used a screen protector, and the glass stayed absolutely flawless all three times. (Even with dropping the phone.) I dunno to me a screen protector seems pointless. The back of the phone certainly needs protecting though, that’s for sure.

Hi,

Thanx. Do you know any way to distinguish between iPhone5 with screenprotector and one without it. I remember using one my iPhone5s and for sure I didn’t remove it. But now I cannot tell if my iPhone has a screen protector on or not….although there are some small marks (sparkling lines) that that I can only see when the phone is exposed to sunlight …thanks for any pointers.
