Pod2g Claims There Will Be No Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 5

Pod2g, the hacker that is supposed to be working with the members of the Chronic Dev Team on an untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 6 and iPhone 5, has had a pretty interesting conversation with i0n1c today.

While claiming there is no jailbreak for the iPhone 5, he also said this isn’t a bad thing: it could “push Apple to open their OS a little more for tweaks and mods”. He also admits that he is a dreamer, so this may not happen.

This could also mean the untethered jailbreak is never going to happen, just like i0n1c said recently.

An interesting note, though: there are more than 400 million iOS devices out there, but the jailbreak community counts only a few million devices, which means jailbroken iOS devices account for about 1% of the total. Why don’t the rest of iOS users want the tweaks and customizations offered by a jailbreak?

Pod2g’s answer is simple: fear or just lack of know-how. Jailbreaking doesn’t mean piracy: the leading hackers are all against piracy. When you jailbreak your iPhone, you open it up to customization – that’s it.

The only way to have a customizable iOS is to pressure Apple to open up iOS 7, and with Scott Forstall’s departure, there may be a tiny little chance to have that. Now Pod2g has started an initiative that is already trending on Twitter: if you want to have a customizable iOS that allows you to enable some awesome tweaks, tweet #weWantAnOpenIOS to pressure Apple.

My experience with jailbreaking has been repeatedly and consistently the most unstable thing I have ever used, as with others I know. Maybe I’m just not talking to the right people, but between a guess at fear and knowledge that most of those tweaks are poorly developed, I think I’m going to stick with the lockdown, thank you.

I had my past iPhones jailbroke and honestly I don’t miss it. There were some things I liked like sbsettings but overall it was just ok. I far more enjoy Xbmc and all the free movies and TV shows on my Ipad and Apple TV…just my two cents

Why don’t you search them? IOS jailbreakers open up ios for extra functionality, not for free shit. Quit being so damn naive.

Brad,

It’s not my job to verify a writer’s claims. It’s a pretty broad statement without any backup and I’m not really aware of who the leading hackers are. Just looking for a little more info as it pertains to this discussion.

As well, nobody said that iOS Jailbreakers DIDN’T open up iOS for extra functionality. That’s kind of a given, so I’m unsure as to why you feel the need to call me naive when you’re not even staying on topic. Thanks for comin’ out though!

Jailbreaking is a necessity for me. This is very unfortunate if it’s true. I love apple devices but the iphone just doesn’t have enough functionality without a jailbreak. If this is true that means I have to switch to android -.-

Same here, I’m close to going with the S3…I got so used to some of the specific tweaks on my jailbroken 4S, so it’s very difficult using the 5 without those.

If iOS 7 isn’t a completely redesign and does not offer the features that have been available on other phones for 5+ years (Bluetooth file transfer, custom apps, themes, etc.) I’m getting the Galaxy S IV for sure and selling my iPhone 5. In other words, iOS 7 better not flop.

Fear my …. !!! Jailbreak leads to an unstable iPhone… I tried it on 2 different versions on iOS 4 and 5 and after a few days (in each instance) and a few tweaks with pgm from Cydia I suddently had to reboot many times a day. Without jailbreak: almost no reboot (once/2weeks)… I love stability over flexibility. Period. Up to point though 😉

I have always had an iphone but I bought them knowing I could customize it with a jailbreak if they want to prevent people from having freedom on what they paid for then I’m switching to Galaxy 3
