iOS Devices Dominate In-Flight Internet Usage [Infographic]

iPads and iPhones account for the majority of connected devices in Gogo’s in-flight network covering the air over North America, according to a report released on Thursday (via Daring Fireball).

Tablets seem to be the most popular way to get online, accounting for 35% of the total connected devices, while laptops grabbed 33% and smartphones 32%. However, when dissecting the mobile device market, iOS devices account for 84% of the mobile operating systems connected to the Gogo network. Of them, 59% of the devices are iPads, while iPhones accounted for 36%.

Apple has seen a 12.8% drop in market share since 2011, when it posessed a total of 96.8%. Android has gained traction with 16% of the connected devices compared to 3.2% recorded two years ago.

Web surfing is the top online activity when connected in the air, followed by personal email, social media, sport scores and shopping. Business travelers use their time online to access work email and finalize reports. Unsurprisingly, since everyone in the air is traveling somewhere, checking the final destination’s weather and entertainment options ranked among the most popular online activities.
