Samsung this afternoon unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4 at an over-the-top, cringeworthy theatrical event held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Here’s a breakdown of what the S4 is all about:

  • 5-inch, 1080p 441ppi Super AMOLED display
  • 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon CPU
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • 13MP camera, 2MP front camera
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB, 32GB, 64GB storage options
  • 69.8mm x 136.6mm x 7.9 mm; 130g; 2600mAh battery; available in black or white
  • GSM/EDGE/UMTS/DC-HSPA+/LTE Cat 3; Bluetooth 4.0 LE

The build of the S4 looks similar to the S3, except for thinner bezels on the sides and the larger screen. The company again decided to build the phone with plastic to make a lighter phone and fit in more materials, Director of Product Planning Drew Blackard tells TechCrunch.

Below is a comparison of the S3 vs S4, via Gizmodo, along with their thoughts on the device:

There has been a ton of hype and build-up to this device, and ultimately, it left us feeling cold. The S IV feels uninspired. There are small spec bumps from the previous generation and there’s a ton of software which will largely sit unused. There’s just no wow-factor here.

Samsung also announced new features such as S Translator, which allows live translations; S Voice Drive for using the phone in the car; Air View which allows you to hover over the device to control particular apps; Smart Pause to allow you to pause videos when your eyes look away.

The Galaxy S4 will be available in late April, with no specific dates or price mentioned. You can bet it’ll be around $199 on a three year term, which seems to the ballpark subsidized cost for the latest smartphones.
