Flurry: Activations of Apple Devices Grew 2.3 Times on Christmas Day

Christmas Day device activations increased 2.3 times compared to a normal December day for Apple, but the clear winner appears to be Amazon with its Kindle device, which recorded an amazing 24-fold increase in new device activations in one day, Flurry Analytics reports.

Amazon has been the major winner of Christmas activations during the past three years, but while the Kindle continues to be the gift of choice, the number of activations isn’t increasing as much as it has in the past. While back in 2011 device activations hit a 40-fold surge compared to a normal December day, this year they grew only 24 times.

Apple, on the other hand, continued to outpace Samsung: It saw a 2.3-fold increase in device activations on Christmas Day, while Samsung only saw a 1.9-fold increase, Flurry’s data shows.

However, both tech companies ranked only after Acer, which saw a 5-fold increase in device activations. Looking at Acer’s and Amazon’s product offerings, Flurry suggests that these companies’ pricing strategies have made their products ideal for gifting.

As it turns out, Wi-Fi only tablets are the most gifted products during Christmas — at least according to Flurry, which compared three years of data. And there is a reasonable explanation for this: These tablets are the least expensive, and they also work right out of the box without needing carrier service.
