Apple’s New ‘CarPlay’ Coming to These Countries From Select Automakers [LIST]

Apple announced a major step yesterday: the company is taking over selected cars’ in-dash displays though its CarPlay (iOS in the Car) feature. As part of the forthcoming Geneva International Motor Show, selected manufacturers will showcase CarPlay, which provides iPhone users with an intuitive way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music, and access messages using Siri or touch.

CarPlay is limited to Lightning-enabled iPhones (iPhone 5, 5c, 5s). Once connected, the user can benefit from the built-in virtual private assistant, Siri, to easily access contacts; make calls; return missed calls; listen to voicemail; get spoken, turn-by-turn directions using Apple’s Maps application; and access all their music and listen to iTunes Radio.

“CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing. “iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction. We have an amazing lineup of auto partners rolling out CarPlay, and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.”

CarPay will be accessible in vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo as early as this week. Other manufacturers, such as BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota Motor Corp will roll out CarPlay shortly afterwards.

It is worth noting that CarPlay (part of the forthcoming software update to iOS 7) will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US. Considering CarPlay’s iTunes Radio integration, I think it’s fair to assume that Canadian iOS users can start hoping that iTunes Radio will be available very soon in the country.
