Virgin, Fido and Koodo Offer $45 Unlimited Plan with 1GB Data [QC Only]

It looks like Virgin, Fido and Koodo have simultaneously brought back the $45 unlimited nationwide calling plan with 1GB data only for customers in Quebec. The plan includes the following:

  • Unlimited Canada-wide minutes anytime
  • Unlimited incoming calls
  • Unlimited SMS/MMS
  • Voicemail, call display
  • 1GB of data; $10/1GB overages
  • $45/month; $40.50 if you bring your own device
The plans are listed below from Virgin:

…and Fido:

…and Koodo:

Although this $45/month plan isn’t necessarily new–it last appeared first from Koodo in September 2013, then was matched shortly by Virgin. If you missed it last time, here’s your chance to get it.

If you have an unlocked iPhone in Quebec, paying $40.50 per month for unlimited nationwide calling and 1GB of data is not a bad deal if you’re not a heavy data user and use Wi-Fi often. As for those outside of Quebec–you’re out of luck.

Let us know if you’re going to jump on this. All you have to do is call in and change your plan.

WIND releases a $39 unlimited North America plan and Robellus responds with a $45 plan w/ 1GB of data… only in Quebec…

Makes sense.

Robellus don’t compete with WIND, they compete with Videotron/SaskTel/MTS.

If my phone isn’t unlocked but the 3 year contract has passed, do I pay 45$ or 40$?

Who is it locked to and what phone?

Once your hardware subsidy has been paid off, it can be considered as bringing your own device.

Edit: wait, mis-read your comment.

If your phone is locked, but it’s a Fido phone…you pay $40.50 (BYOD)

If your phone is locked and it is NOT a Fido phone…you’ll need to pay to have it unlocked to use with Fido and then pay $40.50 (BYOD).

can someone explain to me why Quebec only gets pricing like this?

Videotron is a regional carrier which operates in Quebec. It offers pricing and plans lower and more competitive than the Big 3. So the competition creates some decent plans for customers.

I’m all for better offers, but it’s the “simultaneous” aspect about these companies that drives me nuts. They’re the most blatant oligopoly if there ever was one. The feds are trying to gain credit for opening up the market… how about instituting legislation around pricing collusion?

Wow, so much competition !
