Designer Imagines What a Round Apple Watch Would Look Like [PICS]

The Apple Watch, despite not having a specific release date other than ‘early 2015’, continues to dominate headlines. Apple’s foray into the smart watch category so far seems to have impressed even those with the most discerning eye.

But what if Apple had decided to release a watch with a round face instead of a rectangular one? In other words, what would a cross between the Apple Watch and the Moto 360 look like?

Designer Alcion shared his concept with The Verge to show off what it would look like. The design is compelling as it retains the digital crown, side button, but comes with a traditional watch look, in the Apple Watch, Apple Sport and Apple Edition lines.

Apple design chief Jony Ive did say the company went through ‘millions’ of versions and also noted along with iPhone 6, the new timepiece is the design team’s “best work yet”.

What do you think of this round Apple Watch concept?

I think it looks better but I think the reason why they probably went with a rectangle is to fit more on the screen. It makes sense to design it the way they did.

Yeah, with apps and notifications and such, the rectangular screen makes sense.

But they should of made the bezel raised a bit, the way it is not, is just begging for the edge of the glass to get chipped.

Sapphire, not glass. Second hardest transparent material next to Diamond known.

I think it will be fine from an impact perspective.

Yeah, I agree…. the round hardware looks much better in my opinion, but designing round interfaces is a big challenge… you lose a lot of space.

Unfortunately I don’t like this particular round demo either.

Why don’t them look like swatch? Those watches look exactly what a watch should be.

Everyone’s opinion is different I have actually read comment yesterday saying the opposite – “they look like a cheap swatch watch”.

Taste is subjective and it’s hard to expect a company that isn’t releasing a stable of watches (1 watch, 2 sizes) to make one thing for everyone. The phone was hard enough and they still have detractors.
