iFixit Tears Down Apple’s New iMac With Retina 5K Display

Apple revealed its new addition to the iMac lineup on Thursday at a media event in Cupertino.  The folks over at iFixit have already acquired a new iMac with Retina 5K display and they have disassembled it to give us a look at what’s inside.

The internal design of the new iMac shares a lot of the same elements from the previous generation iMac, including a user-accessible slot for easy RAM upgrades.

Apple’s new Retina 5K display, which has a resolution of 5120 x 2880, continues to be manufactured by LG. The only noticeable difference from the previous generation iMac is a wider display cable, which was expected given the high resolution display.

The base model of the device also contains Intel’s i5-4690 quad-core CPU running at 3.5GHz and AMD’s Radeon R9 M290X GPU with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. iFixit notes that the new iMac is using the same SanDisk PCIe SSD as the late 2013 MacBook Pro.

Apple’s new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display gets a repairability score of 5 out of 10 (10 being the easiest to repair). iFixit says that even though the RAM, CPU, and hard drive are easily replaceable (with some adhesive cutting), removing the LCD panel and glass from the device remains a difficult task because they are now fused together.

The new iMac starts at $2,749 (CAD) and comes with OS X Yosemite. Currently, shipping times for the device in Canada are 3-5 business days.

This is not your average consumer product. This is aimed at photography / music professionals, and to some extent video professionals. You want consumer, get a Mac mini, MBA,or iPad.
