iFixit recently dissected the late 2014 Mac mini Apple announced at its October Special Event. If you were hoping for user-replaceable RAM like the 2012 Mac mini, you’re going to be disappointed.
The teardown reveals soldered RAM to the motherboard (image below highlighted in red), which means you won’t be able to upgrade or replace it yourself. The best bet now is to choose your memory carefully when you’re about to make your purchase.
Samsung K4E8E304EE-EGCE 8 Gb LPDDR3 DRAM (8 Gb x 4 = 32 Gb = 4 GB)
Unfortunately, the RAM is soldered to the logic board. This means that if you want to upgrade the RAM, you can only do so at time of purchase.
Just a few days ago, iFixit performed their teardown of the new 5K Retina iMac.
Anyone going to pick up the new Mac mini? You might be better off waiting for more 2012 refurbs.

Thought about the refurb when you originally posted the link but it just seems wrong to be wanting to purchase a new computer already two years old.

Hey Gary would you happen to know the max the 2012’s had for ram upgrading?
I’ve maxed my 2012 mini at 16 gb of aftermarket ram. It’s very disappointing that Apple has gone this route. I understand soldering the ram in order to make their notebooks thinner, but in the mini it’s completely unnecessary.
Been on an ’07 mini that always had upgrade “available” in the app store for the OS but wouldn’t update when tried as hardware was a “problem”.
Maybe OSX / iOS is being shoe horned into one operating system. Cant find the ram requirements on Yosemite but if hardware is locked to 16 then an OS update comes along that suddenly requires a larger ram amount well it would suck on Apples part. Maybe this is an aspect of a larger plan.
Flip side Apple just says ” Nobody complained about the lack of hardware upgradability in iPads and phones.”
not surprising, Apple would rather the user have to buy a new computer if they want more RAM

I remain very happy with my 2012 quad core, haven’t even updated past the 4 GB of ram that it came with, eventually will move to 16…eventually
