New Foxconn Factory to Reportedly Supply OLED Panels to Apple

Back in November, it was rumoured that Foxconn is planning to invest a hefty $2.6 billion on a display factory in Taiwan, which will supply components exclusively to Apple. Today, a new report by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, one of the leading newspapers in Japan, is claiming that Foxconn’s new display manufacturing plant, which will begin mass production next year, will supply Apple with OLED panels, G4Games is reporting.

“Foxconn and Innolux are now working on putting the ecosystem together, which will allow the production of sixth-gen low temperature poly-silicon films, aimed at entering mass production in 2016. 

Foxconn is going to use its newly funded display factory to produce OLED panels. Since the factory is said to be utilized exclusively for producing components for Apple, it’s pretty self-explanatory that these OLED panels will be shipped to Cupertino”.

The report adds that Foxconn is planning to put the OLED panels into limited production by 2016, while it continues research in manufacturing, technology and equipment of OLED displays, which will be used for smartphones and wearables.

It is interesting to point out that currently, LG is the only supplier of panels for the iWatch and so far Apple has only used LCD displays in the production of its iPhones. Does this new plant suggest Apple may be considering a switch to OLED displays by next year?
