TELUS Partners with Public Safety Canada for #BeAppSafe Campaign

TELUS has partnered with Public Safety Canada for an awareness campaign aimed at getting Canadians to think about how to protect their privacy on the Internet and within mobile apps.

TELUS WISE (Wise Internet and Smartphone Education) is for “providing free Internet and smartphone safety education for Canadians and their families.”

Some safety tips from TELUS and Get Cyber Safe include:

  • Only downloading apps from trusted App Stores
  • Keeping your operating system up to date to prevent vulnerabilities
  • Check permissions and privacy settings for apps you’ve downloaded
  • Turn off location tracking apps on your smartphone
  • Set strong passwords
  • Don’t click on suspicious links

“Public Safety Canada is dedicated to tackling cyber threats through our awareness initiative, Get Cyber Safe,” said the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. “We’re pleased to collaborate with TELUS on the #BeAppSafe campaign to amplify our efforts and encourage Canadians to take steps to better protect themselves and their families.”

While seasoned Internet veterans may already know how to stay ‘safe’ on the Internet, for families with children just getting online, these basic tips may be of help.

For iOS users, you can check the privacy and location permissions of any app by going to Settings > Location Services.
