Google Photos for iOS is Now Available for Download

Earlier today at Google’s I/O developer conference, the company announced a new Google Photos iOS app would be coming with unlimited storage for your photos. The app is now available for download in the App Store.

Description
Google Photos is the home for all your photos and videos, searchable and organized by the people, places, and things that matter.

Google Photos is like having your own personal assistant to help you make the most of your photos.

• VISUAL SEARCH: Your photos are now searchable by the people, places, and things that appear in your photos. Looking for that fish taco you ate in Hawaii? Just search “Hawaii” or “food” to find it even if it doesn’t have a description.

• AUTO BACKUP: Keep all your photos and videos safe and accessible from any device. Choose free, unlimited cloud storage available at high quality, or store up to 15GB original size for free (shared across your Google account).

• SAVE SPACE ON YOUR DEVICE: Google Photos can help you clear safely backed up photos and videos from your device so you never have to worry about deleting a photo to make space.

• BRING PHOTOS TO LIFE: Automatically create montage movies, interactive stories, collages, animations, and more.

• EDITING: Transform photos with the tap of a finger. Use simple, yet powerful, photo and video editing tools to apply filters, adjust colors, and more.

• SHARING: Share hundreds of photos instantly with shareable links and use whichever apps you’d like to share.

Note: Face grouping is not available in all countries

The app offers two options for photo storage to choose from: unlimited high quality or original. The high quality option offers unlimited free storage recommended for cameras with 16MP or less, while the original limited storage option uses space from your Google Account’s 15GB of free storage (or if you have DSLR photos).

The design of the app is quite nice and it’s easy to use and the idea of the assistant is kind of neat. You can search photos by keywords, while at this time, Google says Face grouping is not available in all countries.

If you want unlimited backup of your iPhone photos, this is just yet another option with a good looking interface (Flickr is another alternative that backs up full resolution images with 1TB of storage).

Google wants Google Photos to become ‘Gmail for photos’, as explained by the company’s Head of Streams, Bradley Horowitz, in an interview on Medium worth reading.

Yeah, it’s a great app for 1.0, so far so good.

So far so good. Although I don’t like the auto Collage feature as it doesn’t let you change the order of the pictures.

Taking forever to back up my photos. Seems to stop uploading when the phone locks. Is everyone experiencing that?

if its anything like on android, it’ll usually backup only when on wifi and plugged in. at least in the app settings you can set it up this way.

Tried that and as soon as the screen locks it stops.

Ehh… no sure I’m interested in having Google analyze all of my personal photos so they can sell all my info and data to whomever they please. I’d rather pay for the iCloud storage.

At least they collect data anonymously. They don’t know you’re you… at least that’s what they say.

Either the facial recognition part doesn’t seem to be available in Canada or I’m just an idiot who can’t find it.
