Netflix Updates iOS App With Support For In-App Subscriptions

Netflix has announced that it is adding the ability for users to subscribe to their video streaming service within its iPhone and iPad apps. The announcement was originally made by a new ad featuring two characters from Orange is the New Black.

Like Hulu, Netflix is opting not to raise the subscription price for in-app subscribers to make up for the App Store’s 30/70 revenue split, with Apple getting 30 percent and developers getting 70 percent.

Other streaming services like Spotify pass the loss onto the subscriber, raising the price for their service if a user subscribes from within the app. On the Apple TV, the company is offering a more generous revenue split, with Apple taking 15 percent of revenue generated from services like HBO Now.

Netflix for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store. The app requires any device running iOS 7.0 or later and has been optimized for the iPhone 5, 6, and 6 Plus.
