Griffin’s Upcoming ‘BreakSafe’ Brings MagSafe to Your Retina MacBook

It’s not the most attractive accessory I’ve seen as of late, but it sounds like a very exciting product, nonetheless.

I’m absolutely in love with my 12-inch Retina MacBook. It’s more than fast enough for everything that I want to do on the machine, is (arguably) one of the most beautiful products that Apple has ever designed, and is so portable and lightweight that I sometimes forget that I’m carrying the machine with me.

The thing that I miss the most about my older, heavier, 15-inch MacBook Pro? Well, that would be MagSafe.

Sometimes, on those odd days when I don’t carry my computer with me, I’ll unplug the USB-C cable from the unit… just to be safe. This is something that I’ve never done (or even had a single worry about) with any of my previous MacBooks, and in the short eight months that I’ve owned my 12-inch machine, I’ve already had a few legitimate close calls.

Of course, everyone that owns the 12-inch Retina MacBook misses MagSafe.

Today at CES in Las Vegas, Griffin Technologies has unveiled a product that aims to solve this issue for MacBook owners like myself, and if the product works well, it’s bound to sell them a lot of accessories.

Breaksafe

The accessory is called BreakSafe, and it’s a 6-foot long magnetic power cable that has a USB-C connection on one end, and a magnetic connector on the other. A 12.8mm dongle will plug into your MacBook’s single USC-C port in order to give you that breakable, magnetic connection that you’ve been missing since April.

Griffin notes that because the adapter only protrudes 12.8mm, you can simply leave it plugged into your MacBook all the time (though that sounds a little awkward, and would prevent you from using that port for anything else, of course).

I’m certainly interested in the BreakSafe. My only worry is that with the MacBook’s incredibly light weight, the magnet would have to be very weak to successfully detach in the event that someone tripped over the cable.

In any case, I can’t wait to get my hands on one. The BreakSafe should be available this April, and will cost $39.99 in the US, with no Canadian pricing available at this time.

Retina MacBook owners, is this the accessory that you’ve been waiting for? Sound out in the comments below!
