What does the “SE” stand for in the naming scheme of the newly announced iPhone SE? The Internet went wild trying to guess yesterday when it was announced by the company:

According to Apple SVP Phil Schiller last night, he confirmed it means “Special Edition”, to journalist Jason Cipriani (via The Verge):

When rumours of a new 4-inch iPhone first started making headlines, many believed it was to be called ‘iPhone 5SE’, until Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac told everyone Apple would drop the ‘5’ and just call it iPhone SE last month.
The iPhone SE packs the same hardware features as the iPhone 6s, specifically the A9 processor, RAM, 12MP iSight camera, Touch ID but no 3D Touch, at a lower pricepoint, starting at $579 CAD unlocked (Canadian carrier pricing to be announced soon). The phone will available for preorder this Friday, with a launch on March 31st.
Geekbench 3 tests this morning revealed the iPhone SE has 2GB of RAM, the same amount found in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

I think “Small Edition” makes more sense, but I assumed they wanted people to think it meant “Special Edition” and were just going to stay silent on the matter.
C’mon people. It was previous obvious that SE meant Special Edition. Let’s put that to rest and move on.
Sale Edition. It’s the phone you put on sale. Shrunken edition. Well, at least we know that you can fit the iPhone 6s into a smaller form.
Hopefully they don’t make an extended version next year and add an X to the end.
All these names are stupid IMHO. Should be simple: iPhone mini (instead of SE), iPhone, and iPhone Pro (instead of plus). iPad mini, iPad (instead of iPad Pro 9.7) and iPad Pro. To be fair to Apple, Google has the worst names on the planet for their O/S: Jellybean, KitKat, Lollipop.
Disagree with iPhone Pro. There’s nothing inherently “pro” about an iPhone with a just larger screen and optical image stabilization, so “Plus” is IMHO sufficient, even if a bit inconsistent compared to their iPad line.
I wonder also if they avoided the “mini” because their iPad mini line isn’t selling so well and they want to avoid associations.
