TELUS has finally launched VoLTE (over over LTE), with a first rollout for customers in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
VoLTE allows compatible smartphones to make and receive calls faster (reduced dial tone delay) over the TELUS LTE network, which means better call quality, plus customers can now use voice and LTE data simultaneously.
The company explained in an emailed statement voice calls will be seamlessly transitioned to HSPA networks when travelling outside of LTE coverage, and also there are no fees associated with VoLTE and the service does not consume any data.
As of now, VoLTE on the TELUS network is limited to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4 smartphones. No word on when iPhone support is coming, but a carrier software update most likely will be required introduce it soon, so keep an eye out.
Rogers and Fido launched VoLTE for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus last October, while Bell has been testing VoLTE (via MobileSyrup) in some Ontario area codes unofficially.
TELUS explained they “will continue to expand VoLTE coverage and our list of compatible devices through 2016.” News of TELUS VoLTE launching first made its way out to TELUS dealers on Friday.

This is good news! Hopefully they also add WiFi calling support… the other two carriers do. Telus has great coverage in Atlantic Canada, but it’d be useful for inside concrete buildings.

I’ve heard of it, but it’s a non-public beta, isn’t it? You have to be invited or something? As such, I never really bothered, since my reception is just fine at home and I don’t make many calls. Besides, I’ve recently switched over to Koodo.
It’d just be nice for it to be native, though, hey?
I’ve been using it for so long I didn’t even realize it was still in beta, and yes, native would be way better.
