Find Stores to Test Apple Pay in Canada with MasterCard Nearby for iOS

Canadian banks launched support for Apple Pay this morning, with RBC and CIBC adding MasterCard, Visa and debit card support. TD, Scotiabank and BMO note their own launches are “coming soon”, saying their debuts will be in a matter of weeks.

By now, many of you have added your Visa and MasterCards to Apple Pay and want to test them. The following featured stores will accept Apple Pay, according to Apple:

  • Apple retail stores
  • Canadian Tire
  • Chapters
  • Coles; Indigo
  • London Drugs
  • Mark’s
  • McDonald’s (we found varies by franchisee)
  • On the Go
  • Pedro Canada (#voteforpedro)
  • Pizza Hut
  • Roasters
  • Staples
  • Tim Hortons

Other stores where Apple Pay works from our tests with American Express include other big retailers like Shopper’s Drug Mart and Save on Foods.

But if you want to find other smaller stores that accept Apple Pay, the MasterCard Nearby iOS app will show you them on a map, based on your location. We’ve shared the app before, but it was recently updated to include an Apple Watch app, plus it’s worth mentioning again now.

The app’s opening splash screen advertises it “can help you find places where you can pay using Apple Pay.” All you do is search by merchants via the Contactless symbol, and they’ll show up on a map:

Merchants listed should theoretically be capable of accepting tap to pay on their terminals, and thusly Apple Pay with your MasterCard from RBC and CIBC. Let us know how this app works out for you.

Isn’t this list kinda pointless as any store that accepts tap will accept Apple Pay? Especially in Canada where tap is so widespread it seems kinda silly to have it. Now the States it does make sense as tap isn’t as widespread.

Sometimes you want to know which (non big chain) stores are around you accept Apple Pay if you’re travelling.

I hear ya Gary, I guess with Apple Pay perhaps more and more people won’t be carrying their bank cards with them so they’d want to know ahead of time. I always carry my wallet with me when I leave my house so to me it wouldn’t be a big deal to just pull out my Debit/Credit card if the terminal doesn’t accept tap.

I was playing with it today. I got a little ambitious and went in to a Petro-Canada without my wallet. Big lineup. I backed out from actually buying something because I couldn’t remember if they had tap-and-pay. I think I’ll still carry my wallet around with me for the time being until I can make a solid mental-map of places that accept tap-and-pay.

There’s nothing worse than Apple Pay anxiety when a massive line up is behind you!

There are still some big chains such as Wal Mart who do not accept tap and pay. I was hoping this would galvanize them into accepting the payment but no word yet.

Thanks for saying the above SmokeJV. I was under the impression that tap = Apple Pay compatible but then read this post and thought I was wrong.

I tried to use my RBC mastercard with my Apple Watch @ Tim Hortons this morning but it said not supported. I could pay with my Apple Watch and Amex easily with no problem. I guess the Visa and MasterCard with RBC still needs improvement to support Apple Watch pay.
