Last fall, Netflix explained a price hike would be coming for legacy users, after increasing its starter prices by $1 to $9.99 per month. The reason for the increase at the time was so the company could “continue adding more TV shows and movies including many Netflix original titles, we are modestly raising the price for some new members in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.”
We had the old $7.99 per month plan which included two screens at a time and HD (it was later bumped to $8.99), but according to a recent email blast our price will now be $9.99 per month, charged on our next billing cycle by June 30, 2016 (so a dollar more):
If we want to change our streaming plan, the only options are to downgrade to $7.99 for one screen at a time in standard definition (ain’t nobody got time for dat) or the four screens plus HD and Ultra HD for $11.99:
Netflix isn’t shy about telling members to cancel their subscriptions too if they’re not happy about the price increase:
I’m sure most people won’t mind about the $1 increase, but for some that may be a deal breaker. Some that do subscribe to Netflix in Canada also expand their libraries by using VPN services to unlock geo-restricted content.

went to the 7.99 non hd plan!!! i have no problem with that for i am the only in my house using this, which means only one screen being used at a time! a lot of the content is still non hd! i am not worried!
What content is non-HD? Other than old TV shows that aren’t possibly available in HD, I very rarely come across anything that’s non-HD.

Well, yes. But the term “non-HD” would indicate it’s not available in HD. I was referring to content that can’t be streamed in HD.
Cancelled a month ago.
I have no problem with the price increase. I was even thinking of bumping up to the $11.99 package. But the geo-block stuff has me thinking of just cancelling and going with something else. The content for Canada is starting to really feel lacking. Between B and C movies and standup comedy filler I just see quantity over quality.
Mix this with the constant pulling of tv shows and movies… I’m starting to miss the old days of video stores. At least I knew almost every time I walked in there would be a new release to check out or the film I was thinking of renting from a few months back would still be in the store.
If it’s too expensive, split the subscription with a friend.
Ummm $7.99 to $9.99 is a $2 increase, not $1. Just sayin’…
The regular price had been $8.99 until last fall when it went up by $1 to $9.99.
Legacy users had been given a reprieve before the increase from $7.99 to $8.99. Our $7.99 price point was protected for 2 years; those 2 years are now up.
So, it was a $1 increase over the then current price, as the story reads. For those of us coming off our price increase hiatus, it will be a $2 increase because we’ve been protected from two $1 increases over the last couple of years.
perfect timing for my credit card to be compromised… May give CraveTV another try, the 1 month demo i tried had great content but trouble streaming… Hopefully they’ve fixed it
im the guy that everyone uses for netflix lol. I am looking into cancelling it. I only watch daredevil and orange is the new black. I will watch punished and dont care for luke cage (i feel the actor lacks any personality). All of these shows i can download online anyway. People look at it as a $1 increase or $4 for the big package but i look at it as 10-12$ for something i use for maybe a weeks worth of time in a year. It’s cheaper to opt in when those shows are released and cancel.
I do not mind paying for $9.99 but not for such a limited set of shows and movies compared to our American friends. I will finish Daredevil and another show and maybe cancel. No longer worth it unless they get more or the same content as our American friends get.
Is Ultra HD just for 4K TVs, or is it also for Blu-Ray quality HD? I seem to recall when they first launched Ultra HD a few years back it was about better quality 1080p, not 4K
At $7.99/month our household didn’t mind subscribing continuously, even during summer months or vacations where we didn’t need/use Netflix. Now we simply don’t subscribe for 3 months of the year and get our “old price” back. Maybe even 4 or 5 months. Netflix may earn less if more people start subscribing for fewer months than before. They should’ve grandfathered early-adopters.
