Corning yesterday launched Gorilla Glass 5, which the company says was able to survive 80 percent of drop tests from 1.6 metres high onto rough surfaces, which is up four-times better than competitors.

Despite being tougher, Corning explains “it still provides the damage resistance, optical clarity and touch sensitivity Gorilla Glass is famous for.”

John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass, said in a statement, “With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses.”

Corning Gorilla Glass has been deployed in 4.5 billion devices worldwide, in more than 1,800 product models across 40 major brands. The company says Gorilla Glass 5 is available now and “is expected to be on product models from leading global brands later this year.”

That last line makes everyone want to believe Gorilla Glass 5 may make its way into the upcoming ‘iPhone 7’ this fall, as the supplier’s glass has previously been used by Apple, starting with the original iPhone.
