Snapchat Unveils $130 Video-Recording Sunglasses Called ‘Spectacles’

On Friday, Snapchat announced its first hardware product called “Spectacles,” which are $130 sunglasses that are equipped with an embedded camera.

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the camera embedded in the glasses captures 10-second of video with the tap of a button. Revealed to the The Wall Street Journal by company cofounder and CEO Evan Spiegel, Spectacles are designed to break free from the confines of conventional smartphone video.

“It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again.”

Spiegel said that watching the video afterwards is akin to reliving the memory since you are experiencing it from the first-person.

The report notes that the Spectacles will use a 115-degree angle lens, though it is still unclear whether or not the device will feature two cameras (as show in the picture above).

Despite the lengthy post from the WSJ, little is known about the actual product that is set to ship this fall. Battery life, weight, available onboard storage and other basic device specifications are at this point unknown.

Snapchat’s Spectacles will be priced at $130 when they are released (in limited numbers) this fall and will be available in black, coral, and teal.
