2016 13-Inch MacBook Pro Has Removable SSD in Non-Touch Bar Model [PICS]

OWC got their hands on the entry 13-inch MacBook Pro model without Touch Bar and in their quick teardown, they have noted the solid state drive module is removable.

Here are the observations from OWC:

  • Solid State Drive module is removable
  • Bottom was more difficult to remove than previous generations, but it was not glued
  • Speaker module needs to be removed to pull SSD back
  • SSD had very strong tape covering the interface port
  • Laptop automatically turns on when you open it regardless of pressing power button

What does this mean? With a removable SSD, this opens the door to a customer being able to potentially upgrade their solid state drive themselves to a higher capacity in the future.

Given the prices of these new MacBook Pro models, being able to upgrade an SSD yourself can end up saving people money, versus paying Apple’s upgrade costs.

If the entry non-Touch Bar model can have its SSD removed, there is a chance the Touch Bar versions could too. We’ll find out when the Touch Bar models ship in the next few weeks and people start prying them apart.

This sounds as a bit of relief to shamelessly high price of MacBook Pro. If the touch bar MacBook is user upgradable, it will be wise to order the base model and upgrade along the way as need arises rather paying upfront to apple and save a lot of ????
