TELUS VoLTE Coverage Expands to Ontario
TELUS has expanded VoLTE (voice over LTE) to customers in Ontario with compatible devices. The feature allows customers to “place and receive calls over the TELUS LTE network instead of the HSPA network.” VoLTE e911 is not available yet in Ontario, so standard 911 calls will still apply.
The following devices on a postpaid plan will support VoLTE on Telus with LTE SIM cards:
- LG G5
- LG X Power
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- LG G4
- Samsung GS6
Telus says VoLTE devices activated after April 18, 2016, will support VoLTE automatically when on the latest software update from devices.
VoLTE allows for both calls and data to be used simultaneously over the LTE network, whereas previously calls would be routed over 3G. VoLTE also supports wideband audio codecs for increased call quality, plus calls are routed much faster than on 3G.
A support document was updated on Wednesday to add the inclusion of Ontario. The update said “currently VoLTE is available in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario (excluding Ottawa, Kingston, North Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste Marie, and Thunder Bay).”
Earlier this year, customers in Montreal saw VoLTE available for iPhone. Telus says “Stay tuned, we will be adding more locations in the future.”
