Next Year’s Emoji Candidates Feature 67 New Designs, Including Sad Poo

The Unicode Technical Committee has introduced 67 emojis as “draft candidates” for potential inclusion in the Unicode 11 standard to come in in the latter half of next year, which may dictate what characters will be seen in iOS 12 and the follow-up to macOS High Sierra.

According to a new post on Emojipedia, some of the new candidates include a bagel, broom, cupcake, kangaroo, salt shaker, and a frowning version of the infamous “poo emoji.”

Unicode president Mark Davis announced the latest additions during the quarterly Unicode Technical Committee meeting. A finalized list of emoji candidates for next year will be announced in October, with the official names of the new characters set for some time early 2018.

“A final candidate list is to be decided in the coming months. Decisions regarding the final list of candidates is scheduled to take place at the next UTC meeting in October 2017,” reads the post. “Final candidates will receive names and code points in early 2018, which is the earliest that vendors may have certainty about the status of these emojis.”

New emojis for 2017, which includes 56 new characters, include the Bitcoin symbol, broccoli, two different dinosaurs, a vomiting smiley, a sandwich, and more. These emojis should be available on smartphones at some point later this year.
