Facebook Will Launch Initiative to Protect Canada’s Next Election from Cyber Threats

According to a new report from Reuters, Facebook is planning to launch an election integrity initiative that will help protect Canada’s next election from cyber threats.

The decision was made due to pressure the social network is facing over its role in possible Russian meddling in the last U.S. presidential election. Canada’s minister of democratic institutions Karina Gould will speak at a launch event next week.

Last week, Facebook said that an operation, which likely took place in Russia, had placed thousands of advertisements with polarising views on various topics like immigration and race. On Wednesday, the company introduced tougher rules on who can make money from advertising on Facebook.

Facebook is seeking to launch the program in Canada in order to fend off critics that say they aren’t doing enough to stop the spread of misinformation and fake news.
