Lyft Launches in Toronto on December 12

San Francisco-based ridesharing company Lyft announced last month it would launch in Toronto, marking the first time it has debuted outside the U.S.

Now, the company has confirmed to The Canadian Press its launch in Toronto will take place on Tuesday, December 12, ready to take on rival Uber.

Service areas will take place between Hamilton and Oshawa, and as far north as Newmarket in Ontario.

Lyft drivers in Toronto will require a Private Transportation Company (PTC) driver’s license, which the company applies for on behalf of drivers. A HST (harmonized sales tax) number is also required by drivers as well.

Aside from Toronto, Lyft also has plans to enter Ottawa, which faces opposition from established taxi companies, similar to the situation in Toronto.
